Hello, Friends!

I will be getting my first guide dog next month, and I have a pretty major concern.

I know that guide dogs are not allowed inside temples, and I have to say that I definitely agree with this rule. I am concerned, though, about leaving my dog with someone as often as I will be going to the Temple.

At this point in my life, I attend the temple once a month, but if I have the opportunity to go twice in one month, I take it. Because the Temple is about 1.5 hours from my home by car and about twice that long by train, my trips tend to take about six hours at the least. This is a long time to leave a guide dog with someone, especially a new guide dog. Eventually, when I can take the time to do it, I want to start working in the Temple, which would require me to go more often and for longer periods of time.

What have those of you with guide dogs done in this situation?

Thank you,

Rachel

When we were on our Mission this came up. WE had to travel 2 1/2 miles to the Albuquerque Temple with no way to take my dog. I called and talked to one of the councilors to the President of the Temple and told imp about this. He was so wonderful
! They found a place for her however I couldn't go and called and thanked him. So call and talk to each Temple. Some won't and some will. Do not let them put the dog in the Welcome center for it is open and kids are running and etc. Tell them she or he need to be in a secure place. If the dog makes noise they might not let her come again since the Temple grounds are soquiet. My dog doesn't bard and that is why I felt good about leaving her. Good luck. Also if you have a good neighbor and you feel they will do all you need for her to keep the dog with them I've done that. I would give your dog some time with you at home before leaving her or him with anyone or alone. Good luck.

Thank you! I spoke with my Temple President on Saturday, and he is
looking into options.

Have any of you experienced any other issues with guide dogs in the
Church of which I should be aware? Visiting (and home) teaching come
to mind; when visiting someone for the first time who is inactive, do
you generally leave your dog at home?

When I do my visiting teaching I will call and ask if they have any dogs that are in the house. Then if they say they don't then I ask if I can bring mine. The only trouble I have had is sometimes people don't want me to bring the dog in their car which you might have to ask them. You might get in the stage of educating people about you and your dog so they have a better understanding of them.
