Subject: [BlindLDS] Computer resource

Hey folks,

I am a member of the church in Texas and currently teach the temple preparation class and I’m the Webelos den leader in our ward.

I have been in the field of blindness for 35 years. I  In addition to teaching cane skills (O&M) and consulting, I am the Executive Director of a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Computers for the Blind (CFTB).  I am not posting this to try to promote or sell anything.  I just want to share it as a resource mainly to newly blinded persons or low vision folks or people who cannot afford new computers and the expensive assistive technology that makes them accessible.

Over the past 25 years (CFTB) has provided 9,000 computers to help persons who are blind or have low vision to increase their independent living, employability, and quality of life.  We receive donations of no longer needed desktop and laptop computers from businesses and individuals in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Our volunteers refurbish them, install the assistive technology they need and then we send ship them free matter for the blind to persons throughout the United States. See attached Fact Sheet if you are interested.  Many of the state agencies for the blind will pay our small processing free for someone who needs a computer and we often have grants for those on SSI (Supplemental Security Program).

We recently received a grant that will allow consumers to obtain Talking Typing Teacher for $10. That’s 90% off of retail. It is a talking typing tutorial that will teach you how to type without sight.  I have attached a press release if you are interested.

Lastly, We also have a large lending library of descriptive videos for the blind on DVD.
