Hello. My name is Tyson Stokes and I work for FamilySearch.org, the Church’s family history website. We are working to improve screen reader accessibility and need some feedback to see how it’s working. In particular we want to see if you can successfully identify details of an ancestor’s child on our detailed ancestor view page. If you’re willing to help please email me at evalu...@familysearch.org and I’ll send you the information you’ll need to test the page. You do not need to be an expert in family history to help out. It should only take you a few minutes for this test. Thanks so much!

This sound really wonderful that you want  to help.  Do you have anyone who knows screen readers and etc. for the blind on your staff?  For this is the first place to look. WE are all a little discourage. WE seem to be a group who has been forgotten by the church.  With this and movies that the church keeps putting out with music only which doesn’t help us at all to know what the message is trying to give to us in the musice movie.  Anyway, good luck!

Hi Sandy--

Thank you so much for your feedback and insight. Music videos can be nice, but I'm sure you'd love to hear the message too! I can imagine that it can be very frustrating to have no idea what a video is showing. I will pass on your thoughts to my colleagues who produce church movies and videos. Regarding your question about individuals who know screen readers. Yes, the family history department has had 3 interns over the past few years and currently one full-time missionary who all have visual impairments and use screen readers exclusively. Also many individuals in our department work with and have received training from the Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University as well as our local State Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired. In addition to this the church has a division called Special Programs & Services who work with many teams at church headquarters to build products and services that will accommodate everyone. With your help, we can all continue to remind those who are designing and building resources for church members to make them accessible to all. Continue to voice your thoughts in forums like these and especially in the feedback link at the bottom of any LDS.org webpage.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Thank you so much for your help! I have received the email with the questions but have been super busy. I plan to get to them today.

It would be great if you could pass along the information about the videos! I don't even bother watching them because I get absolutely nothing out of them. If they had someone write a script for a descriptive video and had someone there at them, that would be ideal.
