Has anybody actually replaced the skylight on a 473.

I did one on my old 400 with pretty good success however the 473 is a bigger job to due the size and curve.

I asked two Beneteau dealers and both had a Similar estimate of around 24 hrs of labour.

That seemed like a lot of work. I priced the lens from Beneteau and it is around $900 with the discount. Assuming 100 for caulking etc

Any suggestions or ideas

If it is scratched can be buffed with good results.
I have buffed the companion way hatch and came out perfect.

Good question David I’m thinking about doing the same thing myself as mine has a degree of crazing...
Only $900 for the three window roof lights?

Mohammed, crazing is different. It’s inside the glass not on the surface

The boat I am close to making an offer on has a leaking, crazed and butt ugly skylight.

Annapolis Yacht Sales said the bulk of the work is in removal and preparing the surface. They said it is not hard just very time consuming.

Wondering about tackling it my self.
I spent about 7 hours doing the skylight on doing 400. I had it removed in about 30 minutes. My sense is the skylight removal is simple with a windshield seal cutter. I have one.

Even at that I did not get the substrate neatly as clean as I wanted.

I removed and rebedded skylight on 440. It didn't take 24 hrs. Took 6 to 8 hrs.
Worked out well.
Tony at Select Plastics in Norwalk said it couldn't be done.

Fletch,
I had m skylight replaced on the 473. Had an independent specialist do it. It was less than a day's work. The tough job is the removal and cleaning of surfaces to be sealed. With regards to the bend, two sand bags on each end for 24 hrs will hold it in place until adhesives cure. No need for pre bend. If you remove the old one, you can have it made by any reputable acrylic shop for less than half beneteau's cost. Just make sure about tint and size match.

I agree with George. Cleaning must be meticulous. Any acrylic shop will cut it to size and the sand bags will shape it.
We used Silkaflex. Need primer and other associated products.
I think Tony at Select Plastics will do Acrylic but he suggested I go to a local shop.

Fletch and All,

I just had a long conversation with Tony at Select Plastic.

He has never made the sky lite we are referring to, but he states that he can.

He would like someone to send him one, so he can measure it and record the dimensions.

He says he can get the colr and thickness exact to the original.

He would be able to give a better price if we get a few folks together for a quantity buy, as opposed to just pricing just one.

Mine just started to craze this year, so im not sure if I will do it this year.

Tony did add that any solvents, harsh cleaners and even windex will greatly accelerate the crazing.

He was unable to give a target price, as he doesn’t have the dimensions. (I will measure this weekend).

Tony also doesn’t want to give the appearance he is taking aftermarket business away from Beneteau, as he feels they have a great working relationship, and its beneficial to everyone to keep it that way..

Thanks

James

How about asking B for a copy of the print which will have all the dimensions and specifications. Ones on boats may be subject to deterioration due to environment.

Another note from my discussion with Select Plastics yesterday, Toni stated that this is really one continuous piece of plastic and BeneteaU paints around each individual opening to give the appearance of three separate windows. He stated he does not recommend it as the paint can degrade the plastic.

I’m wondering if anyone has installed this as one solid piece, And what does it look like?

I paid to have two skylights replaced in my '06 Moorings 403 (built in late '05) due to leaks.

The first was done by a company in Annapolis who will remain nameless, shop near Annapolis Landing Marina.  The brand new skylight installation leaked before I got to Norfolk.  I lived with it for a couple of years but the leak got so bad I collected over a quart of water in a pan from one summer afternoon thunderstorm.

So I headed south to St. Barts Yachts in Charleston. Jean-Michele Morrison and Eddie there both had worked for Beneteau in the past.  They told me that B Marion, SC had moved a carpenter into plastics when my boat was built. Apparently this guy didn't understand the need for primer when installing bent skylights, therefore a lot of leaks, many fixed under warranty.  Eddie installed a new one using the proper primer, adhesive, and procedures, and it has been watertight since.  A dry bilge is a fantastic thing.

Good luck!

Greg

p.s.  What's this discount you mentioned?

and BeneteaU paints around each individual opening to give the appearance of three separate windows. He stated he does not recommend it as the paint can degrade the plastic.

I’m wondering if anyone has installed this as one solid piece, And what does it look like?

It is one solid chunk of plastic that looks vaguely like a car windshield that has been stretched.  It is a flat trapezoid that gets bent during installation to conform to the curvature of the deck.  The bending makes it act like a leaf spring so it tries to spring back into a flat sheet.  Therefore you need primer, the proper adhesive, and weights and/or ropes and spacers to force the ends down while the adhesive is curing.

The field guide someone posted above looks like a close match for the good installation I had at St Barts Yachts.

Then how come the windows come out in sections?

Are we talking about the same skylight design?  My boat is a Moorings 403 / B393.  Mine came out in sections too, but only because the old skylight got broken in both cases :-(

It is one piece. The purpose of the paint is important, to keep UV from breaking down the adhesive.

I’m not so sure about that.
My caulking is not painted and its original from 2004. The painting coincides with the interior openings of the boat to give the appearance of individual windows.
The paint on mine does not touch any caulking.

Thanks

I think the paint is there to hid the frame and give it a clean edge look from outside. Most of the windshield on cars are painted black around the edge for the same reason.

These skylight are very difficult to seal.  You are dealing with different expansion/contraction characteristics of the FRP deck, acrylic lens, and adhesive-sealer; not to mention the curvature of the deck.    Throw in direct UV rays and high temps in the summer and cold temps during the winter and you have a situation where there is constant expansion & contraction occurring;  sooner or later something has to give and leaks are bound to occur.

Have to give Beneteau some credit as the skylight on my '06 Ben 343 did not leak for 9 years.  I resealed mine two years ago with the same primer, adhesive, and sealer that Beneteau used; however,  I did not completely remove the lens after talking to another owner who cracked his lens trying to remove it.  I did remove all of the sealer and adhesive around the lens and the recessed deck area in which the lens is seated.  I could actually see where the leaks were occurring on the forward curved ends between the lens and deck.  I was meticulous in removing the sealer and adhesive,  sanded the edges of the lens and the recessed area between the deck and lens,  and thoroughly cleaned everything with acetone.  Primer was applied per the manufacturer's instructions; same with the adhesive and finally  with the sealer.  No leaks for two years, now its leaking again at the forward corners.  I plan to repair it again, this time using Sikaflex 295 UV and associated cleaner, primer, and activator ($160).   I realize that I am not going to obtain as good a seal as possible without removing the lens; however, I don't want to risk cracking the lens.

Finally,  I do believe that it is important to have a sunbrella cover fabricated to cover the lens and sealer margins to extend the life of the sealer and to enhance the longevity of the seal.

By the way,  It took me 2-3 days working alone to remove the adhesive and sealer and clean thoroughly,  mask the deck and lens, apply primers, adhesive, and sealers and to clean up.  It is a very labor intensive job and not one that I am looking forward to redoing.  I can appreciate how some of you are getting estimates for 24 hours of labor.

On my just new to me O400, these skylights might as well be open holes. Where did you find the product info for "the same primer, adhesive, and sealer that Beneteau used"?

Thanks

Try Jamestown Marine.
You want Silkaflex and all associated material: primer, gun etc
