Hello fellow Beneteau folks.

I have a 1987 First 405 and would like to replace the 4 rectangular fluorescent fixtures in the main saloon with LED fixtures. The existing fixtures (the originals I believe) are recessed. Outside dimensions are 14 1/4 x 7 1/2 with depth of 1 1/4.

See attached picture.

Cheers,
Brian Wessner

Start here.  The owner is a member of the group I recall.

I think replacing those fittings with similar Led. Units would be a challenge. My plan would be to remove the florescent rubes and fittings and replace them with Led bulbs. Dried has some components specifically designed to that.

I relamped my entire boat (15 lamps total) with LEDs from www.AliExpress.com for less than the cost of one lamp from a US retailer. Go to AliExpress and search for your lamp type. If you have a dimmer make sure you get diimmable LEDs.

I recommend looking into CREE LEDs specifically. While there are a ton of folks who recommended various places when I did this 6 months ago, I found all of the lights I ordered too bright / harsh even when choosing warm white or something close to the existing lighting.

I wrote up my specific experiences finding CREE LEDs for my 2000 Beneteau 311 at https://www.sailbits.com/blog/2016/04/halogen-light-replacement-cree-leds/

I replaced all my halogen bulbs with led's from aliexpress. My G4 led's cost around 80 cents each. In your case I would look into led strip mounted in an aluminum strip sold separately.
