At the risk of exposing my ignorance of the etiquette/practice of rafting up, I’m wondering if it is considered impolite to run a generator (nothing special, standard 5hp, standard installation in starboard lazarette of B423) at night during a raft up.

I’m asking because I’m about to go on my first raft up and I like to keep the aircon/heat going all night (in addition to quietly listening to the TV, using the microwave, recharging various electronic stuff, etc.).

                Thank you,

Larry-
thanks for posing the question and for your consideration. We feel that it is rude behavior to run a generator anytime after about 6pm because that is when we typically relax in the cockpit over wine, conversation and the sunset, etc. Part of sailing is the harmony with the natural elements. We do not watch TV on board nor do we have AC which I understand is more of an issue down South than here in New England out @ Block Island. We do however, run our fridge 24-7 and all other electrical devices using one 140 watt Kyocera Solar Panel with an MPPT controller and a battery bank of 400 Ah. We even leave the fridge running non-stop at the mooring in Noank and always have a full battery bank.
Again thanks for considering that other sailors might have a different perspective on the precious time we have aboard.

Larry,

Once the cocktails begin to flow, I never hear mine or my neighbors at a raft up!

This is easy, I assume if you are rafting up, you are friends.  Friends talk openly so you just talk about your situation and check to see if it is a problem for them if you run your generator.

In most anchorages it is considered bad etiquette to run a generator after 6 pm and absolutely rude after sunset.
