I've finally decided to stop paying someone to change the oil and filter
on my Bene 31 and start doing it myself. To that end:

What do people like for oil extraction? I've got a Yanmar 3YM20. I don't
think draining into a pan will be feasible. I see that WM has a number
of extraction pumps that all seem to be a either bit small in capacity,
or considerably larger than I need. It has a listed capacity of
2.7L--how much of that am I likely to really extract?

What is the best source of compatible oil filters?

Thanks!

I have used a Pela PL-6000 oil extractor for 15 years on my boat's
Yanmar 2GM20F. It has a 6L capacity while the engine takes 2L plus the
transmission 0.3L. It's compact and easy to stow as the pump separates
from the container. The vacuum release valve and a hose sheath broke
after many years; both easily fixed with duct tape.

Hope this helps.

I accomplished the oil change. The only hitch was the one I expected,
which is it's really hard to get a wrench on the oil filter. A strap
wrench was useless, since you have to turn it quite a bit just to get it
to engage. I managed to remove the old filter by hand.I've hand
tightened the new one as tight as I can by hand, but have a tiny leak. I
expected that, since the Yanmar instructions say to turn it another 3/4
turn with a tool.

What tool do others use for this? Back in the days that I did my own car
oil changes, I used a cap-style wrench. I found one that I hoped would
fit (nominally 64mm, 14 lobe, which matched my measurement) but it's a
bit too small. Does anyone know the correct size, or can anyone
recommend an alternative tool for this?

I don't know what it is called but I have a tool that looks like a giant pliers but the ends are curved. It works great, not sure where to get it. It was on the boat when we bought it.

Hi Ben,

Did you spread a tiny bit of oil on the filter gasket before installing the new filter? That helps ensure the gasket doesn't bind (ie-create a point for leaking) as you tighten down the filter.

Cheers,

Or did you leave the old gasket (thin rubber ring) in place (sometimes hard to see) such that you have two gaskets there now ?

From plumbing store. I have one it is made to change the drain basket on a sink drain.

Yep, I did that. Thanks!

It's also possible the drippage is some old oil that I missed when
wiping off surfaces around the oil filter after the change.

Ooh, I hope not. I don't think so, since the old filter came off pretty
easily. I got it off without the wrench, which makes me wonder if the
guy who changed the oil last had the same problem. OTOH, it wasn't
leaking before.

I actually have one of those I use on water filter housings. It didn't
occur to me to try it on the oil filter. Access may still be an issue,
but I will give it a try.
