When I pulled out my furling main, the sail came out but the car pulling the sail got stuck about 3/4 of way and won't move. Since I have electric winches it seems to be really stuck, won't move for or aft.
Any suggestions?

Bill,

You might want to try disconnecting the outhaul car from the clew. Tie the sail around the boom. Now you have the car free of anything except the boom. That should give you the opportunity to find out what is causing the problem.

The Plastic ball bearing inside the car are bad or broken.
You probably canot get the ball bearing alone. You can get the whole car and the bearings. They are not that expensive.

You can buy a rebuild for the car.
This sounds like the sail is jammed more than an issue with the car.

Bill, I have had the same issue and found that with the kicker tight all kinds of problems happen. Mostly the car traveling ¾ aft and jamming. If you notice the foot of the main is quite a bit higher on the boom at this ¾ point compared to fully aft. This means the force is verticle at this point rather than horizontal along the boom. Further pulling especially with the wench will pull up not out. I have gone to a larger block and gone under the pulley then back to the outhaul aft of the boom. Check the phonic balls in the block for the proper amount and see if some are going flat if it is a Zspar setup. Check also if your topping lift on the boom is too tight as this also can create an issue especially when the kicker is pulling down.

Good Luck, Mike

Hi Bill, Run up to the mast, grab the foot of the sail at the slot and pull. If the sail comes out easily, it is most likely a car problem. The car could be jammed, the main-sheet or boom Vang too tight, or I guess the ball bearing broken.  I keep the car and track lubed with Sailkote McLube. I would release the out-haul line and see if the car moves without pressure.

If the sail does not come out easily when pulled from the foot, check the in-haul line and furling mechanism screw to see if the line is warn and jamming at that point. I could be time to replace the line.

Good luck.

Thanks for all info.
It is the bearings. Lubed and hammered and got moving. Need to replace the car.
Hope it holds out till I get back home.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the advice. A lot of good info. It is the bearings in the car. I think some are missing and they needed to be lubed. Had to tap with hammer and use some wd40 to get the car to move forward. Now I am lubing with mac lube.
Part of the joys on my boat are 4 electric winches. Part of the problems on my boat are 4 electric winches! When something gets jammed, it really gets jammed.
I need a new car when I get back from trip.
Cheers,
Bill

Bill, you can buy the balls at West Marine 20 in a bag and you need at least 2 bags.

Call Shawn at US spars. The new car comes loaded with bearings in a small loader track.

US spars is good value.

Glad to hear it is working. Sometime moving the car stop back a foot helps. In general, when furling or unfurling. Main sheet loose, boom vang loose, small amount of tension on outhaul or furler, and NEVER use the electric winch (I am guilty also and have busted a few blocks etc,)...

Bill, not sure if this is of interest but we replaced the original Beneteau hardware with this nice new track and Harken car (see attached pic) and we never have trouble anymore.

The plastic ball bearing in my '99 were bad/went missing in 2009/10. I found replacements at West Marine and rebuilt/reloaded the car. Has worked great since then.
