I have the referenced Engine and Transmission on my B 49 with only 240 hours. I have noticed a small oil leak under the transmission after a three or four hour of operation . Has any one have an idea where this leak is. Is there some hose that carries the transmission fluid to a cooler somewhere and returns it back to the transmission.

No it is light yellow very clean. I would suspect engine oil would be somewhat black.
I changed both engine and Transmission about 20 hours ago.

Does yellow equal oil plus water?

No it is oil. I looked at the manual there is a drain plug under it. It could be dripping from there or the manual showed a fluid cooling line that comes out and goes into a heat exchanger and comes back into the transmission . I will check all of this next weekend and let you know.

If it's yellow and milky In texture, it's definitely water that has formed into an emulsion

If you overfilled the transmission when you changed the oil, then the excess will blow out the vent hole and collect under the transmission. That might be the source, if it did not leak prior to changing the oil.

water / coolant fouled oil is like coffee with a creamer added...  oil becomes milky and frothy ( like a latte  ) when contaminated by coolant... the froth comes from the coolant boiling ( releasing bubbles ) in the oil

coolant in oil is generally from a failed head gasket  ( head gasket failure comes from overheating )

This is very topical for me. I have a B423 with the Volvo D22 engine. I also have a small leak under the transmission – very small.

The shop tells me it is from the seal: need to reseal.

Does anyone know what is involved? How much that effort is likely to cost?

                Thank you,

Yes. that is what I’m told.

Interestingly, to me, I replaced the oil-absorbent paper a couple of weeks ago. I also haven’t used the boat during that time. when I checked on it yesterday, there wasn’t any oil spots. Does it seem reasonable that there would only be a leak when the engine was running? I’m planning on going sailing again – depending on the weather – this Thursday. I should learn more.

I’ll need to personally investigate further.

In case it was caused by an overflow, as mentioned in an earlier posting, any idea as to where the vent is located?

                Thank you,

                larry
