Hi Everyone,
Working on my windless problem. It appears that all electrical systems are good: checked solenoid, cables, voltage, resistance, breaker etc, everything good.
Seems like windless.
Going to try getting at armature, trying to rotate to see if dead spot.
Any other thoughts?
Simpson Lawrence Horizon Express.
Anyone know if I can get at armature just by removing screws on side panels?
Thanks,
Bill

Could be worn brushes. Have you checked them yet?

There are some magnet inside the motor that are epoxeid to the casing.  They might have become detached.  It happened to me in my previous boat        B 461 it had Simpson Lawrence.  I took the motor to a starter/ alternator repair shops they epoxeid the magnets back and worked fine.

The Simpson Lawrence windlass is manufacturer discontinued. Parts are scarce. Bite the bullet and replace with an H-3.

Yes parts are scarce and can’t be located in the USA but there is a gentleman in Scotland that appears to have bought up a bunch of Simpson Lawrence parts and they can be found here. http://slspares.co.uk/

I refurbished my functioning Horizon Express a couple of years ago including having it powder coated and fitting all new bearing and seals and it now runs and looks like a new Windlass. That option is definitely cheaper than replacing it but maybe it’s time?

Regards

Stewart

Biting the bullet for the H3 is an expensive bullet, like $2500!

I am not arguing, I am just commenting. I had no idea a new windless was in the $2500 range. Foolishly I thought it was more like $800. Shows you that I haven't been looking at windless.

It’s for a boat, of course it’s expensive.

probably have not noticed that filling up the car is a $100 or so event  either ... :=)

using a $20 and getting change back is so far back, can't remember when that might have been :=)

windless are notorious for using up their brushes ( there is a lot of current and arcing under big load )  if the rest of the connections are clean,  check the brushes,  odds are they are gone ( the lack of power when operating and  is there lot of soot /dust )   brushes are cheap,  most alternator / starter repair shops have them.... easy diy or take the whole unit to them...   if diy use the old ones for proper size (like brake pads,   new will have a lot of "meat"... get some that are close the brush material is soft and can easily sanded to exact shape  *( if you can find a exact match )

I still recommend check the magnets. I bet they have been detached.  When I had mine repaired it was under $50.00.

spare not spar I assume.

A typo that would not be easily misconstrued outside of sailing circles.
