What are people upgrading to?  Our unit seems to cut out regularly ( to a striped screen)  We might have radar at some point, not really interested in Sonar.  We are planning to retire in a next year and would like to spend more time aboard.  Right now we are in the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior.

A Navionics app on your I-Pad or phone in my opinion is much better than any Chartplotter I have used.

Whatever you decide on, consider a backup GPS. We have a fixed mounted Garmin as our primary GPS - connected to the boat's 12V electrical system, with a hand-held, battery operated GPS as a backup in case of electrical issues. The Navionics iPad app, as James recommends, could be one of those systems.

The original C series had a lot good features for the times. Today's equipment have come a long way. Internal GPS, wifi, improved bus systems such as seatalkng, digital radar and on it goes.

Some things to think about

Connecting to existing systems.
Size.
Expanding later to Radar or AIS.
Touch controls vs  buttons

The old Raymarine products such as St 60 instruments and SG1 course computers can all still work with the new A C E and ES MFD systems.

They have radar dome compatability and seem to have improved vastly.

With taking a look.

The bang for the buck has never been better.

Defender had some E95 factory refurbished MFD units for under 700. That had to be a great value however they may be all sold now.

Happy hunting

Btw the new Raymarine units accept both  Navionics C Map and one other card. That's a great advantage

Thanks David,

Lots to think about.  I will check out the Defender lead.  We have to make an order from them anyway.

I think an iPad makes a great adjunct or backup device. But if you are considering an iPad as a primary solution for the cockpit, make sure you are okay with its visibility in direct sunlight while wearing your favorite sunglasses. Especially if you, like most boats, prefer polarized sunglasses. You would also want a mountable waterproof case and a convenient power source.

Also consider how (and if) you would integrate the iPad with other boat systems. If the OP is coming from a C70, I would be surprised if their boat had any sort of NMEA-over-wifi capabilities.

Ben.

OK Ben, this is embarrassing....I don't know what you mean by NMEA over wifi capabilities.

The other instruments on the boat (wind, depth, autopilot) are all wired in to separate instruments.  No radar yet, but probably in the future.

I use my iPad as a backup - i plug in a small gps device made by Bad Elf that gets its power from the iPad and requires no networking.

Nothing to be embarrassed a about. If you don’t currently have any of your instruments networked, then you may not care about any of this. That would certainly simplify things :-)

I don’t know the networking capabilities of the C70. My boat has an almost-as-old C80, and I have it networked with my wind, depth, and speed instruments, as well as my autopilot. This allows me to display depth, wind, and speed-through-water on the C80. I can also set up a course (to a waypoint, or a sequence of waypoints) on the C80 and have it control the autopilot. This is all over Raymarine’s old Seatalk network, plus a few bits of NMEA-0183. It’s also possible to display things like battery status, engine status, etc, if you have those things instrumented (I don’t, and I doubt you do.) Newer chartplotters support NMEA-2000 (aka SeaTalkNG in Raymarine speak), which has more modern capabilities (and can be more convenient to wire.)

An iPad doesn’t support these things natively, but several apps can support them over WiFi. Some of the newer chart plotters have built in wifi capabilities, which you might be able to use to let an app on the iPad display things like speed, depth, and wind info. You can also do things like program routes on the iPad and send them to a chartplotter or autopilot. If the chartplotter does not have built in wifi, you may be able to install a separate gadget that relays the network traffic over wifi.

One other point on iPads: Only the models with cellular capabilities have built-in GPS. If you get a wifi only model, you will need an external GPS. There are a number available that can connect to the iPad via bluetooth.

Ben,

If your C80 quit working, what would you do?

There is another C70 on Ebay right now for under $500.  They say its in excellent condition (?)

Or, 14 years later, is it time to get up to speed with the newer capabilities.  I really do not want to change thru hulls if I don't have to.

Our Autopilot hasn't worked very well, but at least we got it to stop weaving like a drunken sailor...but that's another issue.  So, would we use the capability to have the GPS direct the boat.  Sounds good in theory.  Having the boat be its own wifi hot spot could be convenient as well.

We actually have an old hand held that we use as back up GPS, and it is quite reliable.  I've heard of people having 2 ipads, one down below, one at the helm.

A point on iPads with cellular capabilities, my understanding is that what they have is not really gps, it's a software triangulation of cell towers that computes a position based on the lat/Lon of the towers in your area. If you're in a weak area or out of cell phone range you're out of luck. As I mentioned the Bad Elf device is a true GPS receiver and connects directly to the iPad, no Bluetooth or wireless connection required- if I remember correctly I think they're about $100, good for peace of mind if you'll be spending much time out of cell range.
Fwiw I compared the position my cell phone gave me at anchor in block island with true gps position on my garmin and there was significant difference, I guesstimated it to be approx 500yds

The cellular iPad has what they call “assisted GPS” or AGPS. All that means is it use the cell tower information to seed the initial fix, so you can get the fix faster. But it works perfectly fine even without cellular service; it just takes longer to get the initial fix.

This site is for sky pilots, but it describes the iPad GPS situation pretty well: http://ipadpilotnews.com/2015/12/ipad-real-gps/

I have a small USB "hockey puck" GPS unit that I can plug into an ultrabook and then run any one of a number of nav apps including open source ones - If I had a second monitor somewhere I could display to that too (future boat ideas - laptop at the nav table, second monitor (waterproof) at the helm

By the way, I purchased a Garmin GLO (Glonass) which is a small device to assist in the location on I-Pad.
It was about $95 and makes the location when using Navionics and other similar programs much more accurate.
It works via Bluetooth

We have an iPad Air that can be used at the front of the cockpit. Have a 12V lighter outlet in the nav table connected to a 12V iPad charger and a 10ft long charging cable. Works great. Yeah, running GPS really draws the iPad battery down quickly.

Before we got the 423, I used an iPad with iNavx to great result on my Corsair F-31.  I did have a problem with seeing the tablet on sunny days, but here in the Pacific Northwest, that is rarely a problem.  😊  My tablet is a Wi-Fi only model, so I augmented with a Dual Bluetooth GPS which works just great and easily finds satellites through the fiberglass deck.  I keep them both on the 423 now as a backup to the main plotters.
