I am planning to start commuting to office by cycle. I will be traveling from Bannerghatta road to Kadubeesanahalli. It is 18 kms if I take the busier, main route (via Silk Board). 22 kms if I take interior roads which have less traffic. My usual commute time is 8:30-9:00 in the morning and 5:00-5:30 in the evening.
Questions :
  • Which route do you guys suggest? Less traffic but lengthy or More traffic but shorter.
  • Is it a good idea to commute such a long distance on cycle? I plan to cycle at least 4 days a week.
  • Suggestions on cycle? By budget is 20-25k. I zeroed in on Montra rock 1.1D, Montra timba, helicon, RockRider 520.
Suggestions please!

Montra Helicon seems to be a good bike. The new one has disc brakes; they don't have the original v-brake version now.

Since this is a bike that folks starting off biking would be looking at, would have liked to see the v-brake version also continued, & would recommend that over the disc brake version. (The v-brake version was also a bit cheaper.)

The 27.5" wheels with Kenda (semi?) alick tyres look good.

The Montra Timba also looks like a good bike for commutes etc.

The Montra Rock 1.1 & Rockrider 520 should also been good options, especially if you are concerned about road conditions (since they are MTBs with front shocks and fatter tyres), but with some riding experience, I think you should be able to handle bad roads on the Helicon or Timba too.

Would suggest Helicon or Timba, over those MTBs. (Btw, RR520 hopefully has trigger shifters, not grip shifters. If the latter, I would suggest not going for RR520.)

Thanks for the posts, guys. I finally ended up buying RockRider 520 (they do have thumb shifters). I could not find helicon/montra in desired size, and the shop owner was more bothered about selling the wrong frame. Hence, ended with Rockrider 520. Have started cycling in the mornings to get used to it and to increase my stamina. Hoping to start actual commute in a week or two. Fingers crossed!
