Folks,

Be careful and safe while you travel in this route on bicycle as there is a lot of wild animals, especially plenty of leopards and elephants.

Some instructions from safety perspective:
1. Settle down to your hotel by 5:00 PM. After that you want to go out see wilderness, rent an SUV and go out, especially around Valparai
2. Do not go to Pooncholai areas in bicycle either in the early morning or towards late evening.
3. Sholayar to Athirapalli is dense forest with plenty of elephants. Since both side of the roads are leaves that elephant can eat, elephants are seens very frequently in road. So try to make this stretch in bicycles during the noon time.
4. In case you meet an elephant[ especially a single one] on the road, wait for it to pass. If you feel that it is aggressive, please take shelter in the next coming vehicle till it pass by. Since other  vehicle drivers are aware of these, they will certainly help you.

Wish you a safe trip.

Thanks
Saidu

Dear Saidu,

Thanks for the suggestions, Yep we had read the blogs and got to know wild life attacks in this region. We will stop riding before 5pm and camp in a safe place preferably inside a village.

All the best.  When we went from Cochin to Valparai, we had also planned on reaching by 5 p.m but reached around 9 p.m.  The road is basically toilet for Elephants, you can see when you ride.  Around 8 p.m we hear drumbeats when we were some distance from Valparai, Some villagers were trying hard to scare away elephants and then all the jeeps that passed started stopping and scolding us idiots for doing what we were doing.  Our grand plan to run side ways and climb a tree or something like that when the Elephants come.  Nishan who was riding with us, had previously broken his wrist when we was riding from Mysore to Cochin and got exited and tried to take pictures of Elephants while riding.  Also I know a person who was riding to Valparai and fell off the road and broke a collar bone. The next day while returning in daylight we saw that most of the side sections were electrical fencing and it would not be a good idea to run into that.  Make sure you plan well and ask around before tent camping etc.. I remember seeing Elephant cross signs at many places and some also had a death count from Elephant attacks.  There are also leeches, snakes and the very same day we went a leopard was killed by wolf pack, I still have the newspaper clipping of this.  This was not inside the forest but right on the road on the Kerala Tamil Nadu border were we stayed on our way back.  The road to Challakudy is closed during night and we stayed at a small place at the border during our return trip.  On the forest leg of your trip the only villages you will see are tribal villages and they have a protective trench around them and I guess they know how to take care of themselves.  Very scenic route, have a good time.  Valparai is mostly tea plantation but Kerala side is protected forests.  This leg of your route has traffic banned from sunset to sunrise, the reason why the animals are back on roads. There were three of us, and one of the rider is presently in Bangalore.  Let me know if you need his contact information.

Dear Justin,

Thanks for sharing your experience, animal density sounds interesting. We will take necessary care and try to camp before 5pm on day1.  All the four participants are basically regular trekker + cyclists. We had made a detailed map, elevation profile and planned our schedule accordingly.  Also on day 2 its will be mostly downhill from Valparai to sholar, we will try to make it during noon time.

Did this in 2011 on my hop-town,
Day-1 has enough villages on the way.
Day-2, please do make sure to pack few things to eat, as for 50kms there are hardly any population, you wont get anything to eat.
What are the dates you are planning it for?
Thanks and Regards,
~Ravi
