Health Equity: Taking the Next Steps (interactive webinar)

Presented by the Community Health Training Institute
What does health equity look like in your community? Over 75 people from across MA participated in our March Health Equity Trainings Series. In order to share the work more broadly and go deeper, we invite you to bring members of your teams, coalitions, networks, communities, and others to this 90-minute interactive webinar. Participation in the prior trainings is not expected - the webinar will be accessible for all levels.
During the webinar, participants will be invited to review four questions explored during the prior trainings. These are key questions to ask to affect change to conditions that contribute to inequities.
The webinar will include practical steps and examples for applying key concepts. The trainer will go deeper into different types of targets for change and examples of tactics. At least three different examples will be explored:
- Policy Change
- Institutional Change
- Building up Leaders
Learning Objectives
By the end of the webinar, participants in the training will be able to
- Define Health Equity
- Name and discuss the four key equity questions to ask to affect systems change
- Discuss practical steps and tactics to improve equity in the realms of policy change, systems change, and leadership development.

RAD Self-Defense Courses

The Boston Police Department and the Oak Square YMCA are offering a free, self-defense course called RAD.
RAD - which stands for Rape Aggression Defense System - is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques designed for women (Ages 18+) that focuses on risk awareness, risk reduction and risk avoidance. Open to all women in the Boston and surrounding communities.
Register at the Oak Square YMCA Welcome Center. Participants must register in person. Space is limited to 20 participants per class.

Allston/Brighton CDC selected to lead "Community Champions" Initiative
The CDC was selected by the Boston Alliance for Community Health (BACH) and the Boston Public Health Commission as one of twelve organizations to lead the PICH "Healthy Community Champions" initiative, which will organize and empower residents to create sustainable changes in smoke-free housing, healthy food and beverage environments, and active transportation throughout Boston’s neighborhoods. For this initiative they will recruit 6 “Champions” to engage, empower and educate their neighbors and peers in making healthier life choices, educating small business owners and pharmacies to the importance of offering healthier food and beverage options to consumers, and advocating to elected officials and local leaders to improve access to and quality of active transit (i.e. walking, biking) in the neighborhood.

Brighton Main Streets study of business district
This spring, Brighton Main Streets has partnered with the MIT Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning to do an in-depth study of the Brighton business district. MBTA Youth Pass
The Youth Pass Pilot is a partnership between the MBTA and the Cities of Boston, Chelsea, Malden and Somerville. The Youth Pass is a LinkPass valid on local bus and subway and will cost $26 a month or $7 for a 7-day pass. The pilot is open to up to 1500 eligible youth between the ages of 12 and 21 in the cities of Boston, Chelsea, Malden and Somerville.
Interested youth can apply to participate in the Youth Pass pilot and spots will be allocated based on a random lottery of eligible applicants. Applications are due April 30, 2015 and the pilot starts July 1, 2015 and will last for a year. Participants will have to agree to anonymous data collection on their usage of the MBTA in order for the MBTA to assess the costs and benefits of the Youth Pass.
Individuals between the ages of 12 and 18 are eligible if they live in Boston, Chelsea, Somerville or Malden. Twelve year olds will have to apply at their municipal partner office. Residents aged 19-21 will have to meet need based criteria by demonstrating enrollment in high school, a GED or other education program, job training program, or state or federal benefit program (like Mass Health, WIC, or living in public housing). Applications are open for the TOD@S Leadership Crew 2015 - a bilingual 7 month long leadership development program for LGBQ/T people of color who have been impacted by partner abuse/domestic violence. This includes those who identify as victims/survivors of partner abuse/domestic violence themselves, as well as those who have been witness to domestic violence, or impacted by having loved ones impacted by partner abuse/domestic violence.

BPHC's Overdose Education and Narcan Training
Since 2007, more than 3,200 people in Boston have received training on how to administer Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, and thousands more people have been educated on overdose prevention techniques. Narcan has been credited with reversing nearly 400 overdoses in Boston in recent years. BPHC offers education and training to opioid users, their families and community partners that work with people at risk of overdosing.
Participants learn about the importance of calling 9-1-1 in the event of an overdose, how to perform rescue breathing and administer nasal Narcan, and treatment options for opioid users. Ongoing community trainings are held during afternoon and evening hours, and are open to the public.

ABCD Career Explorations Program is Seeking Applicants
ABCD Career Explorations provides year round programming to Boston residents, ages 16-21, through job placement, career development, and comprehensive job readiness services through one-on-one case management. Career Explorations offers in school and out of school youth the opportunity to receive basic skills and advanced training in high-demand career fields including building trades, culinary arts, early child care, and health and biotechnology. Through the program youth meet professionals from an array of occupations within each pathway, participate in workshops and field trips throughout Boston to enhance their career development. The Career Exploration staff also provide individual job counseling and assistance with the job search and application process in order to help link youth to jobs that match their interests.
The program includes a 14-week paid internship during the year’s curriculum and free certification for First Aid and CPR training.

Caring Together Focus Group
Caring Together is a joint project of the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the Department of Mental Health (DMH). The project aims to improve the way youth and families receive residential treatment services from the state. Under Caring Together, DCF and DMH have redesigned residential treatment services and have added three new services called Follow Along, Stepping Out, and Continuum. The purpose of this focus group is to discuss your experiences receiving Caring Together services. We want to see if you are satisfied with the services. You will receive $20 as thanks for participating.
We hope to schedule one focus group for parents and one for youth. Groups will last approximately 1.5 hours. We will either schedule it at your provider’s office or during a support group that you attend.

Allston Brighton APAC CFSC IRS VITA Centers
This is an initiative that help taxpayers with federal and state income tax preparation, tax resolution issues, credit counseling, and other issues, including help with Mass Health and SNAP application. This VITA center is open year round helping local seniors, veterans, students, and all taxpayers that filed extensions with tax preparation at no cost. They work with dedicated local professionals and college graduates to help them. APAC works in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue to expedite cases of tax resolution for taxpayers that are receiving letters of assessments.
