Community Updates:
Council Demands Transition Support for Brighton Homeless Students
For most families, “back to school” means packing backpacks and checking bus routes. For the homeless families sheltered in Brighton motels, though, it means another year of wondering whether children will be there on the first day of school. This week, Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George chaired a public hearing to ensure those children arrive like everyone else.
“I want to hear BPS and the state are working to make sure every child will have a good first day,” she told a panel of City and state officials managing the transition of families out of the Charles River Motel. Only 15 families with 21 schoolchildren remain there after months of relocation, but the school year is fast approaching in September.
Homeless advocates noted that it could take up to a week and a half for BPS to provide bus service for its sheltered students, meaning many missed classes or extracurricular activities. Councilors demanded Boston Public Schools become more responsive to the needs of its nearly 4,000 homeless students. Missing even one day is unacceptable, and they deserve every single minute of their public education.

Help Stabilize Allston Brighton During Student Move-In
September 1st is this week and with that will come the students, moving trucks, and all kinds of discarded furniture. The Allston Brighton CDC has a long standing tradition of engaging residents around move in day, which falls on a Thursday this year. This situation presents some challenges so we are calling on YOU for help! Since students will be moving back on a Thursday and many of our friends, partners, colleagues and constituents will be busy with work and personal commitments, we have a few opportunities for you to be involved:
- We will be hitting the neighborhood with flyers, information sheets and bedbug stickers during the morning and evening hours on September 1st through Labor Day weekend. Whether you have a few minutes or a few hours to volunteer with us during this week of transition-it is important that we have a show of force in the neighborhood!
- Do you use BOS311? Would you like to learn how it works? We will be facilitating a BOS311 info session on Monday, August 29th at 6:00pm in our office-located at 20 Linden Street, Suite 288. This info session will provide you with the basic information on how to submit complaints/reports to the Mayor's Office, Public Works, ISD and other city departments via your mobile phone or home computer.
We are counting on YOU, our neighbors, to help us hand out materials, place bed bug stickers on abandoned mattresses/furniture, and log complaints in citizens connect to make this year's move in day as smooth as possible.
How to get involved: There are a few ways in which you can be an active participant in our 2016 Student Move-In Campaign:
1. Participate in the neighborhood walk with Allston Bright CDC -OR- pick up flyers and stickers from us directly (we can also drop them off to you) and distribute them at your convenience (such as during your nightly stroll)
2. Walk the neighborhood with Allston Brighton CDC staff and volunteers using the BOS:311 app -OR- submit complaints via BOS:311 and inform the CDC when a report has been submitted (send confirmation of reports to Desrosier@allstonbrightoncdc.org), that way we can follow up on requests that are made
3. Are you a part of an organization or company? Put together a team of volunteers and make a larger impact over a shorter period of time.
Please contact Desrosier@AllstonBrightonCDC.org if you are interested in volunteering, have questions, or would like more information.

Senior Save Applications Now Available
City announced that applications are now available for Seniors Save, a proactive program that helps income eligible seniors replace failing or inefficient heating systems before winter begins? Senior Saves is now being adopted as a permanent program, following a successful pilot program that began one year ago.
Applications for the Seniors Save program are currently available through the Boston Home Center (BHC), by visiting the Department of Neighborhood Development's website, or by contacting one of the BHC's partner senior agencies. To qualify, income-eligible seniors must be 60 years of age or older and must be the occupants of a residential one-to-four family property or condominium in the City of Boston. The program is open to seniors whose income does not exceed 80 percent of median family income, as determined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Eligible homeowners will receive a $3,500 grant towards upgrades to their heating systems. Any additional funding is available in the form of a zero percent interest, deferred loan, which will only be payable on the sale of the property, a refinance or transfer of the title. Once a senior citizen submits an application, BHC Construction Specialists will work with the homeowner on the scope of the project, and will help select a contractor from the BHC's pre-approved, licensed and insured contractor list. A BHC Construction Specialist will then oversee the work from start to finish.

United Family Support Group at Jackson Mann Community Center
Support group for families and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts
Jackson-Man Community Center, 500 Cambridge St, Allston
Wednesday Nights, 7-8:30pm
United Family support groups are a safe haven for family members and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. These meetings are facilitated by recovered addicts who will share their experiences and offer a solution to the family members who are affected by addiction. United Family was created to answer such questions as: Why do addicts use? Why do they relapse? What goes through their minds while in active addiction and also when removed from the substances? Loved ones often do not understand the addict, therefore not knowing how to address their underlying issues. Family members and loved ones suffer immensely due to the trauma they experience while supporting or living with an addict. Even when the addict gets sober, the family is left with painful emotional scars that sometimes never heal. We are here to provide a holistic program for loved ones who are emotionally damaged from the self-destruction of their addict. We cater to those who have been affected by addiction and have felt, and still feel, the emotional scars. We want loved ones to know that their happiness and mental stability does not need to be contingent on their addict being sober. We offer hope, support, and a solution. This meeting is solely for loved ones, it is closed to addicts and alcoholics.

Free Kids Summer Lunches at Charles River Community Health
495 Western Avenue Brighton, MA 02135 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
We will be serving from July 5, 2016 to September 2, 2016.
Please spread the word and send children to the table which will be located at the patio next to the board room. No questions asked to receive the free lunch.
The YMCA of Greater Boston is working to make sure that no child goes hungry when school is closed this summer. While over 70% of Boston students receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, many of these children do not get enough to eat when school is out. The USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that all children continue to grow and learn during the summer. The YMCA recognizes the need for the program in Boston. Many children, who rely on school breakfast and lunch during the school year, do not have the energy they need during the summer. That’s where we come in, by providing nutritious meals and activities to keep kids nourished and engaged. Kids who get enough to eat and have safe activities to participate in during the summer are less likely to get into trouble. Our summer meals program is a building block in the community for healthy, happy kids who are ready to learn. The Summer Food Service Program for Children is a federally funded program operated nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the MA Dept. of Education through Project Bread. The YMCA will sponsor and administer the serving of nutritious meals and snacks free to children up to the age of 18.
