Please join The Alliance, The Mel King Institute and the YWCA of Boston for a viewing and discussion of the DVD Neighbors: Conservation in a Changing Community.
April 23rd, 2015
9:00 A.M. Networking
9:30 A.M - 11:30 A.M. Viewing and Discussion
Hosted by Boston Private Bank (The Great Room), Ten Post Office Square
"The film, Neighbors: Conservation in a Changing Community examines the challenges and opportunities of neighborhood revitalization through the stories of 12 South End residents (including Mr. Mel King!). The older, working class population is juxtaposed with the more affluent newcomers who are attracted by the prime location and historic architecture as well as the ethnic mix of the neighborhood. While documenting the differences among these residents, the film also reveals their common goals - to make their neighborhood a better place to live. The film remains remarkably relevant for 21st century audiences."

City of Boston's annual Boston Shines neighborhood clean-up
Building off of the success of last year, we will once again spread this city-wide effort over three weekends.  The projects in Allston-Brighton are occurring the first weekend on Friday, April 24th and Saturday, April 25th.  The timing of each project will vary based on location.
After a winter of record-setting snowfall we will need the help of thousands of volunteers to make a difference in all our neighborhoods as we prepare the City for Spring and Summer.  This year we are expanding our volunteer opportunities by focusing on these service areas: physical service, university engagement, youth development and other City of Boston volunteer opportunities.
Being a part of Boston Shines not only helps beautify the community, but it also helps foster an ongoing sense of community service and civic engagement while giving the community, your businesses, and organizations great publicity for being a part of this city-wide event.
There are three very important ways you can get involved:
  • Volunteer your time! The more hands we have on deck, the more ground we can cover in the community.  Individuals, groups and organizations can register here!
  • Host a service project site! If you're a medium or large-sized organization, hosting a service project site is a great way of getting your name out in the neighborhood. For example, NB Development Group sponsored Rogers Park last year as their clean up site. We will have tools, trash bags, t-shirts and a limited supply of mulch, you just need to provide the manpower!
  • Become a Boston Shines Sponsor! Attached, find a sponsorship letter and that were sent out by the program coordinator, Jordan Deasy. Sponsoring Boston Shines is a great way to associate your brand with civic engagement and show that you are not only a good neighbor in Allston and Brighton, but in the City of Boston as a whole. In addition to financial contributions, we are always grateful for donations of tools, supplies, food and drink.  Every little bit helps to make this event a resounding success. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxe5QajDnHA2N29aa1RHdUdmQXVNaU9NeU8wOXB1WWd0Vzlr/view?usp=sharing

Webinar: Using a Racial Equity Lens to Work with Communities in Collective Impact
This webinar is set to take place on Thursday April 30th from 2:00 - 3:30pm ET.
How do you apply a racial equity lens to working with communities in collective impact? Tackling racial inequalities head on is critical to dramatically improving results for low-income people. As a starting point, equitable collaboration with people of color is critical to ensure that social change efforts are informed by the lived experience of the communities they seek to benefit. This webinar explores this aspect of applying a racial equity lens to collective Impact work: how to ensure that community residents influence the design and direction of collective impact initiatives. While advancing racial equity will take more than just bringing community members to the collective impact table, it’s an important step toward achieving dramatically better results for low-income people, especially people of color.

NUTRITION INCENTIVES FUNDING

Mayor Walsh’s Transportation Initiatives for Safer Streets For All
Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced five transportation initiatives to improve how individuals on foot, bike, or in a vehicle move around the City of Boston with a significant focus on improving public safety. The announcements include a complete streets approach to Commonwealth Avenue, featuring protected bike lane on from the BU Bridge to Packard’s Corner, the adoption of Vision Zero Boston, aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities in the city, the citywide replacement of parking meters with intelligent parking meters, and a pilot program to eliminate street sweeping towing. The initiatives are early action projects as part of Go Boston 2030 launched to imagine a bold new transportation plan for Boston for the next five, 10, and 15 years. Additionally, the Mayor and the Boston Transportation Department will begin a nationwide search for a new Active Transportation Director to think holistically about how our streets are used by people who walk, bike, and take transit. “We’re implementing innovative and inventive transportation strategies and infrastructure upgrades in the City of Boston to improve travel safety and convenience,” said Mayor Walsh. “Whether you walk, drive, take the T, or ride a bike on our streets, we’re looking at solutions that can accommodate every mode of transportation in a meaningful way.”
