FriendshipWorks Missing Piece Project
At FriendshipWorks, we believe that everyone, regardless of age, has gifts, skills, and talents to share with their community! This year, we are launching a new civic engagement initiative called the Missing Piece Project, focusing on elders living in the North Allston/Brighton community.
The project seeks to identify the gifts and talents of elders in the North Allston/Brighton neighborhood, and create opportunities for these elders to share their talents with the community through local programs. Opportunities could be as simple and meaningful as sharing a story about what life was like 50 years ago with a group of students, or taking the time once a month to care for the garden at the local library. Other examples of projects could be teaching a small group of adults about how to draw, joining with others who knit to make blankets for families in need, or sharing the gift of conversation with others who are hoping to learn a new language. The possibilities and connections are many and varied!
If you are someone who is 60+ (or if you know someone who is) and lives in North Allston/Brighton, contact FriendshipWorks to share your talents and interests and get connected to your community! Are you the missing piece? Everyone has a talent they can share. The neighborhood needs you!

Sailing program for adults and children. The motto is “Sailing for All” and to keep rates affordable, prices are being reduced based on income. In the summer, the 10 week youth program is run for as little as $1 for the entire summer. Children ages 10-17 can participate. Recommended time is for at least 2-3 weeks. Programs include a clubhouse, where children can choose which classes they'd like to take on a given week, but can always be at the boathouse during operating hours (8:30 am - 3 pm). It is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn to sail. While the children are always supervised, they are given a great deal of independence. Children build confidence in their own abilities and leave with a sense of accomplishment and knowledge.

Consider contacting City Councilors to uphold Boston Board of Health tobacco sales regulations:
Prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products and nicotine delivery products other than menthol in all retail outlets other than adult-only retail tobacco stores and smoking bars.

Consider Supporting the Zoning Reform Bill
Economists estimate that restrictive zoning drives up housing prices in Greater Boston by nearly 20% and leads to a 20% decline in employment. Every day, thirteen acres of forests and farmland are lost to low-density sprawl caused by inefficient and outdated zoning, generating more traffic in addition to infrastructure costs that drain municipal budgets.
    The Proposed Zoning Reform Bill:

    • The bill will stimulate home & business development
    • Communities will increase “multi-family” zoning to build more of the homes we need.
    • Allowing homeowners to create “accessory dwelling units” on their property will enable them to create new housing for relatives or to generate rental income to help them stay in their home.
    • Special permits, which are a common approval process, would no longer require a supermajority vote.
    • Variance reforms will make it easier for property owners to make improvements.
    • Developers will have longer, more reasonable time periods to use their permits.
    • Reforming the appeals process will reduce frivolous lawsuits and lengthy court battles over development, saving time and money for local government, taxpayers, and developers.

    Promotes public health

    • Development project notices are required to be sent to local health boards.
    • Accessory dwelling units are a critical need for families who need to take care of older relatives or those with disabilities.
    • Easier master planning, required multi-family districts in smart growth locations, cluster by-right subdivision, and the opt-in program will all encourage communities to become more compact and walkable.
    • Reforming "Approval Not Required" subdivisions will help reduce the number of driveways that front on busy streets and improve public safety.

Making homeless families’ lives more stable

Under a five-year, $160.5 million plan, he wants to build and rehabilitate housing for lower-income residents, and redevelop existing public housing complexes."

City Council Approves $2.98 Billion Budget for FY2017
The Boston City Council voted on Wednesday to approve a $2.98 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2017. The months-long effort to review, discuss, and modify the Mayor’s initial proposal was handled by the Ways and Means Committee led by Councilor Mark Ciommo. Ciommo chaired roughly thirty budget hearings to crunch numbers with his colleagues and Administration officials before the final vote on Wednesday. The resubmitted FY2017 budget ultimately won the support of a Council majority, but the votes were not unanimous. After reviewing the Mayor’s original budget, the Council rejected it without prejudice to allow the Administration time to produce a second proposal that better reflected their shared priorities. In the alternative budget approved on Wednesday, 95% of net new revenues were devoted to Boston Public Schools, increasing overall investment in the system by nearly $5 million for the largest BPS budget on record. The operating and capital budgets highlighted numerous investments to improve parks, bridges, roadways, and overall City services for the upcoming fiscal year.

Tisch College of Civic Life, recently ranked 27th best university in the country by US News.  Program sites are located in downtown Boston, Lowell, and Providence, Rhode Island. The programs offered by INML are addressing one of the most critical needs we face in the nonprofit sector: access to high quality leadership development opportunities.  We are pleased to partner with INML to advance this work. To apply for a Highland Street Fellowship to the INML, visit https://www.inml.org/apply.html.  Under "How did you hear about our program?" select: Other and enter "Highland Street". You do not have to be a current grantee to be eligible.  Emerging leaders are also encouraged to apply for the INML's free Community Fellows Program, located in both Boston and Lowell. Community Fellows is a one-year certificate program for high-potential emerging leaders that combines instruction on organizational management, community leadership, and social justice. To learn more about INML, visit www.inml.org.

    Community Boating
Monday through Friday, June 13-August 19 from 8:30am-3pm

Free Kids Summer Lunches at Charles River Community Health
495 Western Avenue Brighton, MA 02135 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
We will be serving from July 5, 2016 to September 2, 2016.
Please spread the word and send children to the table which will be located at the patio next to the board room.   No questions asked to receive the free lunch.
The YMCA of Greater Boston is working to make sure that no child goes hungry when school is closed this summer. While over 70% of Boston students receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year, many of these children do not get enough to eat when school is out.  The USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that all children continue to grow and learn during the summer. The YMCA recognizes the need for the program in Boston. Many children, who rely on school breakfast and lunch during the school year, do not have the energy they need during the summer. That’s where we come in, by providing nutritious meals and activities to keep kids nourished and engaged.  Kids who get enough to eat and have safe activities to participate in during the summer are less likely to get into trouble. Our summer meals program is a building block in the community for healthy, happy kids who are ready to learn. The Summer Food Service Program for Children is a federally funded program operated nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the MA Dept. of Education through Project Bread. The YMCA will sponsor and administer the serving of nutritious meals and snacks free to children up to the age of 18.

United Family Support Group at Jackson Mann Community Center
Support group for families and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts
Jackson-Man Community Center, 500 Cambridge St, Allston
    Wednesday Nights, 7-8:30pm

United Family support groups are a safe haven for family members and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. These meetings are facilitated by recovered addicts who will share their experiences and offer a solution to the family members who are affected by addiction. United Family was created to answer such questions as: Why do addicts use? Why do they relapse? What goes through their minds while in active addiction and also when removed from the substances? Loved ones often do not understand the addict, therefore not knowing how to address their underlying issues. Family members and loved ones suffer immensely due to the trauma they experience while supporting or living with an addict. Even when the addict gets sober, the family is left with painful emotional scars that sometimes never heal. We are here to provide a holistic program for loved ones who are emotionally damaged from the self-destruction of their addict. We cater to those who have been affected by addiction and have felt, and still feel, the emotional scars. We want loved ones to know that their happiness and mental stability does not need to be contingent on their addict being sober. We offer hope, support, and a solution. This meeting is solely for loved ones, it is closed to addicts and alcoholics.
