New, neighborhood-wide civic group looking for members: Homeowners Union of Allston-Brighton
The Homeowners Union of Allston-Brighton (HUAB) organization has been formed to bring together individuals who believe that owner-occupied housing promotes neighborhood stability and more robust civic involvement, which helps improve and sustain a higher quality of life and vitality of the community. The group’s mission is to protect and advance the general interests of homeowners who view Allston-Brighton/Boston as their long-term home, and who wish to have a voice in shaping the neighborhood’s and the city’s current and future circumstances, especially as they pertain to homeownership and quality of life issues.
To that end, HUAB will engage in a broad range of activities aimed at:

  • Protecting and increasing Allston-Brighton’s owner-occupancy rate;
  • Ensuring economic, social, and age diversity within Allston-Brighton;
  • Strengthening civic participation;
  • Improving Allston-Brighton’s public image;
  • Promoting pride in home-ownership;
  • Encouraging a sense of community and mutual assistance;
  • Ensuring that new real estate development and other changes are respectful of the scale and character of the neighborhood.

The organization may seek to forge collaborative links with pro-homeownership, and otherwise similarly inclined individuals, groups, and organizations within Allston-Brighton and beyond. We wish to emphasize that HUAB is not “anti-renters”, and it is not our intent to undermine/weaken any existing civic groups in Allston-Brighton.  However, we think that it is necessary for homeowners across Allston-Brighton, like any segment of the population joined by common interests, to be more proactive and united — so that our interests are better protected, and our views and opinions are heard.
What benefits can you gain as an HUAB member as we develop the group?

  • Opportunity to form and strengthen social connections with other A-B homeowners;
  • Partaking in HUAB polling on local issues to influence decisions by city and state elected officials;
  • Access to information and advice on zoning & development issues/disputes;
  • Opportunity to monitor/evaluate and recognize local elected officials’ service to the neighborhood;
  • Email discussion group on challenges of maintaining and improving older homes and landscapes;
  • Opportunity to form a mutual support group for A-B parents of young and older children;
  • Access to a local “Craig’s List”-like listserv (for HUAB members only).

If you support our mission and goals, we invite you to join HUAB either as an Associate Member (no membership dues), or as a Voting Member (yearly membership dues of $20 per person, or $30 per household).  To sign up as an HUAB member, please send your name, home address, email address, and phone number (none of it will ever be shared with any outside parties) directly to Homeowne...@gmail.com . Please feel free to forward this message to friends and neighbors who you feel may be interested in joining our Homeowners Union of Allston-Brighton. We look forward to working with all who want to work with us to ensure a better, stronger neighborhood.

Annual Boston Resident Census
The Boston Election Department is conducting the Annual Resident Census as mandated by state law. They use the census to record people 17 and older who live in the City of Boston. It helps maintain an accurate voter list, and keeps your voter status active. Through the census, the city is able to give people access to a jury of their peers. They use the information we collect to figure out how best to use the City’s resources.
You can respond to the annual census by mail, in person, over the phone, or online. For more information, or complete the census online, visit the Annual Census website.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Do you use the 57, 64, or 86 bus? Help improve the ride!
Mass DOT transportation planners depend on us to give them specific feedback on what they can fix and where. In Allston-Brighton we're starting with the 57, 64, and the 86 buses. Two hours of your time riding one of these routes end-to-end will move us closer to making bus transit safer and faster, benefiting bus riders and drivers alike!
If you're interested in volunteering to improve these major bus routes in Allston-Brighton, contact me at anna.leslie@abhealthcollab.org to learn more!
If you're ready to dive in and ride along, follow these easy steps to collect helpful data:

  1. Choose which route you would like to travel. The best time of day to observe and collect data is commuter times (7am-9am and 4-7pm).
  2. Download and print your route's check list. Each list includes a full list of inbound and outbound stops:
  3. Head to the beginning stop of either the inbound or outbound line. Be sure to bring a timer, pen, and snacks!
  4. In addition to recording time intervals, make note of any obstructions at bus stops, particularly busy stops or difficult intersections. And be sure to talk to the driver - they have a very useful perspective!
  5. Email your completed check list to anna.leslie@abhealthcollab.org, or let me know where I can meet you to pick it up!
Thank you so much for your commitment to improving transit for our neighborhood and city!

Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC)
What immigrants can do now: People should go to a legal services provider to be screened for any possible immigration options other than DACA for which they may already eligible. The ILRC has a comprehensive client intake form to assist practitioners in screening. It can be found online at https://www.ilrc.org/screening-immigration-relief-client-intake-form-and-notes.
The Immigration Advocates Network maintains a national directory of more than 950 free or low-cost nonprofit immigration legal services providers in all 50 states. Senior Save Applications Now Available
City announced that applications are now available for Seniors Save, a proactive program that helps income eligible seniors replace failing or inefficient heating systems before winter begins? Senior Saves is now being adopted as a permanent program, following a successful pilot program that began one year ago.
Applications for the Seniors Save program are currently available through the Boston Home Center (BHC), by visiting the Department of Neighborhood Development's website, or by contacting one of the BHC's partner senior agencies. To qualify, income-eligible seniors must be 60 years of age or older and must be the occupants of a residential one-to-four family property or condominium in the City of Boston. The program is open to seniors whose income does not exceed 80 percent of median family income, as determined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Eligible homeowners will receive a $3,500 grant towards upgrades to their heating systems. Any additional funding is available in the form of a zero percent interest, deferred loan, which will only be payable on the sale of the property, a refinance or transfer of the title. Once a senior citizen submits an application, BHC Construction Specialists will work with the homeowner on the scope of the project, and will help select a contractor from the BHC's pre-approved, licensed and insured contractor list. A BHC Construction Specialist will then oversee the work from start to finish.
To learn more about Seniors Save and to apply for the program residents are invited to contact (617) 635-HOME, or visit the Boston Home Center website: https://www.boston.gov/departments/neighborhood-development/how-join-seniors-save-program

Is your home falling short on safety?
All rental units in Boston need to meet certain minimum requirements. Your apartment must:

  • have heat, adequate exits, and toilets
  • be free of defects that could harm renters
  • be free of garbage and other waste, and
  • have contact information for the property owner visible.
If your new home doesn’t measure up, let us know. Call 311, tweet @BOS311, or download the BOS:311 app to report problems and Inspectional Services will investigate.

Staying Connected: Know Your Rights to Telephone Service
Did you know that some individuals and families may be eligible to have their land line telephone service – critical to health and safety for many people – protected even if they are behind on their bills? Yet again, pediatricians have been placed at the center of a complex, high stakes administrative process that impacts the baby's short-term and long-term health, and the family's short-term and long-term budget and peace of mind. Learn more in our new It Takes Two Guide for Families and Providers.

DAPA, DACA and Immigrant Youth: What's Real?
Did you know that in June the United States Supreme Court ruled in United States v. The individuals and families you serve still may be confused about the status of these proposed policies and whether new pathways to lawful immigration status exist. You can share our newly revised It Takes Two Guide for Patients and Providers.

If you're interested in volunteering to improve these major bus routes in Allston-Brighton, contact me at anna....@abhealthcollab.org to learn more!

  1. Email your completed check list to anna....@abhealthcollab.org, or let me know where I can meet you to pick it up!
Thank you so much for your commitment to improving transit for our neighborhood and city!
