Community Updates:

Charles River Community Health Center in danger of 1,918 patients losing their access to care. Act Now to Help!
On September 30th, the Community Health Centers federal funding line item will expire - this fund currently accounts for 70% of our federal funding, and ALL funding for critical workforce programs: the National Health Service Corps and Teaching Health Centers program. A Continuing Resolution does NOT automatically extend this funding - we need Congress to specifically act to extend it.
Community Health Centers now serve 1 in 12 Americans, or 27 million people.  Health centers don't just save lives, they also lower health care costs, create jobs, and reduce hospital visits so that fewer dollars are spent on "sick care."   But unless Congress acts by the end of this month to extend their funding, the consequences for health centers across the country, including Charles River Community Health and our patients will be catastrophic.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has projected that the impact of a 70% reduction in funding would be dramatic: closure of 2,800 health center locations, elimination of more than 50,000 jobs, and a loss of access to care for more than 9 million patients.  Keep in mind this is a program that has been in place for more than 50 years and enjoys broad bipartisan support in Congress.  Right now more than 75 national organizations,  representing doctors, nurses, hospitals, health centers, children, patients, the faith community, financial institutions and health care industry partners, are banding together and calling on lawmakers to extend health center funding before September 30th.

Allston-Brighton CDC Hiring All Bright Community Canvassers
All Bright Community Canvassers will report directly to and support the Outreach Coordinator in getting the word out about our All Bright Homeownership program, an initiative designed to combat investor ownership in the Lower Allston neighborhood by buying homes and selling them to individuals and families who agree to live there via deed restriction. Outreach will include canvassing the area, prioritizing knocking on renters’ doors to gain potential buyers for the program. For renters who may not be ready to buy, Canvassers will be prepared with materials to hand out about our Homebuying 101 classes, affordable housing advocacy, and more to engage neighbors in Allston Brighton CDC’s work. All Canvassers will be compensated $15 per hour with a minimum of four hours a week expected to work each week. The team will be provided with comprehensive canvassing training before going out into the field. This is a temporary position from October 2nd through November 22nd with the possibility of continuing in the 2018 spring and summer sessions as well. If this sounds like the job for you, please send your resume and a short cover letter to Jenna at connolly@allstonbrightoncdc.org before September 15th.
