Senior Save Applications Now Available
City announced that applications are now available for Seniors Save, a proactive program that helps income eligible seniors replace failing or inefficient heating systems before winter begins? Senior Saves is now being adopted as a permanent program, following a successful pilot program that began one year ago.
Applications for the Seniors Save program are currently available through the Boston Home Center (BHC), by visiting the Department of Neighborhood Development's website, or by contacting one of the BHC's partner senior agencies. To qualify, income-eligible seniors must be 60 years of age or older and must be the occupants of a residential one-to-four family property or condominium in the City of Boston. The program is open to seniors whose income does not exceed 80 percent of median family income, as determined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Eligible homeowners will receive a $3,500 grant towards upgrades to their heating systems. Any additional funding is available in the form of a zero percent interest, deferred loan, which will only be payable on the sale of the property, a refinance or transfer of the title. Once a senior citizen submits an application, BHC Construction Specialists will work with the homeowner on the scope of the project, and will help select a contractor from the BHC's pre-approved, licensed and insured contractor list. A BHC Construction Specialist will then oversee the work from start to finish.
To learn more about Seniors Save and to apply for the program residents are invited to contact (617) 635-HOME, or visit the Boston Home Center website: https://www.boston.gov/departments/neighborhood-development/how-join-seniors-save-program

Is your home falling short on safety?
All rental units in Boston need to meet certain minimum requirements. Your apartment must:

  • have functioning carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
  • have heat, adequate exits, and toilets
  • be free of defects that could harm renters
  • be free of garbage and other waste, and
  • have contact information for the property owner visible.
If your new home doesn’t measure up, let us know. Call 311, tweet @BOS311, or download the BOS:311 app to report problems and Inspectional Services will investigate.

Staying Connected: Know Your Rights to Telephone Service
Did you know that some individuals and families may be eligible to have their land line telephone service – critical to health and safety for many people – protected even if they are behind on their bills? As with other types of utility service, healthcare providers play a critical role in helping consumers establish eligibility for these protections. Check out our new It Takes Two Guide for Patients and Providers.

Getting Special Formula to Kids Who Need It: An Overview
Did you know that many parents have a really hard time getting "special formula" for their medically vulnerable children with unique nutritional needs? Yet again, pediatricians have been placed at the center of a complex, high stakes administrative process that impacts the baby's short-term and long-term health, and the family's short-term and long-term budget and peace of mind. Learn more in our new It Takes Two Guide for Families and Providers.

DAPA, DACA and Immigrant Youth: What's Real?
Did you know that in June the United States Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Texas, affirming the lower court decisions blocking the Obama Administration's proposed DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans) and expanded DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) programs? The individuals and families you serve still may be confused about the status of these proposed policies and whether new pathways to lawful immigration status exist. You can share our newly revised It Takes Two Guide for Patients and Providers.

Senior Citizen Property Tax Work- Off Abatement Program Extension
The tax work-off abatement law allows a city or town to establish a program giving property owners 60 years or older the opportunity to volunteer services to their city or town in exchange for a reduction in property tax. United Family Support Group at Jackson Mann Community Center
Support group for families and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts
Jackson-Man Community Center, 500 Cambridge St, Allston
Wednesday Nights, 7-8:30pm

United Family support groups are a safe haven for family members and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. These meetings are facilitated by recovered addicts who will share their experiences and offer a solution to the family members who are affected by addiction. United Family was created to answer such questions as: Why do addicts use? Why do they relapse? What goes through their minds while in active addiction and also when removed from the substances? Loved ones often do not understand the addict, therefore not knowing how to address their underlying issues. Family members and loved ones suffer immensely due to the trauma they experience while supporting or living with an addict. Even when the addict gets sober, the family is left with painful emotional scars that sometimes never heal. We are here to provide a holistic program for loved ones who are emotionally damaged from the self-destruction of their addict. We cater to those who have been affected by addiction and have felt, and still feel, the emotional scars. We want loved ones to know that their happiness and mental stability does not need to be contingent on their addict being sober. We offer hope, support, and a solution. This meeting is solely for loved ones, it is closed to addicts and alcoholics.

Turn Your Hard Work (Raking Leaves) into Compost
Boston’s Public Works Department will be working hard all month to collect residential leaf and yard waste. This material will all be composted and reused as a resource, rather than disposed of as “waste”. Here’s what you need to know to participate:

  • Place all materials in large paper bags or barrels labeled YARD WASTE
  • Tie branches with string: 3’ max. length, 1” max. diameter
  • Place barrels, bags, and branches curbside by 7:00 AM

Do not include any plastic bags, and do not place large branches in barrels. If you have 2 recycling days per week, your leaf and yard waste collection is on your first recycling day of the week.

View your leaf and yard waste collection schedule by clicking here.

Boston’s excess yard material is composted at a site off of American Legion Highway. Composting helps conserve and rebuild a scarce resource -- soil. Finished compost makes its way back into the community when its donated to Boston’s 100+ community gardens. Making composting a regular part of your routine can help move our entire waste system to be more sustainable, towards zero waste -- something the City of Boston is working on right now.

FIND YOUR COLLECTION DAY

Electric vehicles just got cheaper for Bostonians
Electric vehicles charged with electricity in New England produce significantly less pollution than traditional vehicles. That is why Mass Energy is offering a discount and rebate program that allows people to buy an electric vehicle from a standard dealer at a lower, pre-negotiated rate. This new program is a great opportunity if you or someone in your family relies on a personal vehicle -- it’s also super simple to take advantage of. Visit the Mass Energy website and see the different cars that are offered in the program. From there, choose the car that you want, fill out a short registration form, and then a dealer will contact you to set up a test drive. If you’re interested in these incentives, know that you’ll need to make a decision soon. The program ends February 28, 2017.

Click here to submit a nomination. On August 23, 2014, Boston lost one of its brightest rising stars. Dawnn Ashley Jaffier, an innocent victim of gun violence, was tragically killed on her way to a neighborhood celebration. To honor Dawnn, and all victims of senseless acts of violence, the Highland Street Foundation, community leaders, and Dawnn's colleagues, peers and family, created the Light of Dawnn Awards. These awards celebrate individuals working in Boston's nonprofit sector who demonstrate the spirit that is Dawnn's legacy. You can learn more about Dawnn's remarkable impact here. Please take this opportunity to nominate a nonprofit professional in Boston who works on the front lines and demonstrates what it means to expand opportunities for others. A selection committee of Dawnn's colleagues, peers, and family will make the annual selection of three individuals to receive a Light of Dawnn Award. Those selected will be recognized at a public event and receive a monetary award for their outstanding efforts.

Governor Baker Announces 9C Budget Cuts
On December 6th, Governor Baker announced 9C budget cuts.  The Governor cut $98 million from the $39.25 billion state budget in response to softening revenues.  These cuts included $6 million from housing programs, including $2.4 million from MRVP, $500,000 from Housing Consumer Education Centers, and $500,000 from Public Housing. Other cuts included $400,000 from the Emergency Assistance family shelter system, $650,000 from the Homeless Individual shelter system, $185,000 from Homeless Programs Administration, and $1.3 million from DHCD Administration.  9C budget cuts are done unilaterally by the Governor and can't be overridden by the Legislature. However, funding for the cut programs can be restored through a supplemental budget passed by the House and Senate. Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo released a statement calling the cuts premature and is considering a supplemental budget to restore the funds. Senate President Stan Rosenberg said that he looks forward to restoring funds to programs which support our neediest. For more information on the cuts, including a list of earmarks cut in each housing line-item, please click here.

Volunteer Opportunities:

ABCD's Adopt a Family program
Adopt a Family is a program that supports an entire family over the holidays. Our case managers identify families that we've worked with over the year in need of some extra support. Case managers then collect wish lists from the families that we pair with donors. This program allows the whole family to have a cheerful holiday experience, alleviating some of the stress of trying to provide gifts for their children. Wish lists come with a list of needs vs. wants for family members, as well as some specific interests.
