It started as a little oil coming out of my universal engene. It appears to be coming out of the bottom. The engene runs great otherwise. The amount looks to be increasing. My boat used to be owned by Chris Windler, and he had precise details on engene .Thanks John

The pan or the front case are your best bets for leaks. They are made from cast aluminum and tend to get salt corrosion. You most likely will not be able to purchase either of the cases. You will need to find a very good aluminum TIG welder to repair them. I have a friend in Houston that is excellent.

My bet is the rear main seal. It's a $10 part that takes two days to replace.

Yep, I've replaced mine also. That was our first course of action when we found noticed a lot of oil in the bilge. Still had oil leaking. Turned out to be my front case was leaking too.

JoAnn, this is Chris. You have all the engine manuals on your Model 30, 5424, 3 cylinder 30 hp Universal engine.

Your engine has an oil pan drain with a black hose coming out from under the engine with a 1/8" brass plug in it. It is for draining the oil so you don't have to suck it out the dip stick hole. It is possible but unlikely that the hose connection to the oil pan has come loose. But it is very possible the the brass plug which you remove to change the oil has loosened. It is also possible that the hose has been rubbing against something and has sprung a leak. Check that out first.

Secondly, get some old rags and wipe the engine all around the oil pan. Run the engine and then when it cools run a clean rag over it again check on each swipe to see where it is leaking.

Another problem on this engine is the bracket where the oil filter is on. It has been know to develop a slow leak. Or maybe the oil filter is not on tight enough.

It is possible the oil pan has corroded thru but unlikely as it has never gotten wet. Check the oil using the oil dip stick. If it looks like mayonnaise you have water in the oil and that is a real problem.

Just as a reminder, weeks before the storm, 10/2012, I had just rebuilt the head, new valves, seals and gaskets for all the head. It also has new motor mounts, a new raw water pump, the injectors were checked and good, a flexible coupling, drippless seal and drive plate.

Let me know what you find and I will try and help you. What did you do about your prop? Are you interested in the spare CNG tank?

I had a similar problem with my Westerbeke. The fitting on the bottom of
the oil pan had worked loose and was leaking oil. I put my digital
camera under the engine and took several snaps as I couldn't get my head
down there to see where the oil was coming from. Sure enough the photos
showed what needed to be done

The steel oil pan on our westerbeke became corroded and began leaking.  I have the pan off and in our foundry shop now.  Just completed a cast aluminum replacement.  Have not refitted with the new pan yet.
