Any wisdom on engine well sound insulation? I redid it about four years ago with acoustic tiles. They have begun to deteriorate and I wonder if I even need to replace them.

Thanks,

Tutt,

My original sound and heat insulation started deteriorating within the first 10 years. I cruised the boat for the next 8 years with no insulation with no ill effects but I could clearly tell the difference and wasn't happy about it. As I work to get my Allmand functioning again after 16 years in storage I have replaced all the insulation prior to installing the engine this week.

All I can tell you is I wouldn't have been able to do this job with the engine installed. I had to remove all the wiring and plumbing in order to clean the engine box, make templates for the new insulation panels, spray the new contact cement and exactly place the panels since the cement allows for no adjustment once it makes contact with the panels. Finally I now had to drill holes to locate the wiring harness, all of which couldn't be done with the engine in place.

With luck I will have Camelot back in the water within a month and see how she sounds.

Thanks for the input, Keith. Good luck getting your boat back in shape. I am sure it will all happen. I had to completely redo the interior of mine after I bought it. Labors of love. What the hell? Keeps us off the streets.

Sam,

You're not going to believe this one. I bought 2 self install kits in Sept, 1988 called Peace and Quiet, Yachtsman Deluxe. I carried them with me or stored them for the last 27 years. When I pulled them out to use them 2 weeks ago I was sure the spray adhesive wouldn't work. To my great surprise it worked great. Does this get me the procrastinator of the year award?

I just checked to see if a similar product was still available and to my surprise, it is. It's marketed under the name of Soundown and the exact kit is still sold. For the Marine business where products are always going in or out of business or are being obsoleted, that has got to be close to a record.

I spoke to a guy at Noise Reduction Enterprises who not only remembered the companies ownership changes but was also familiar with Allmands.
He told me it is distributed through Defenders, Jamestown, and Hamilton Marine or direct via 800-359-1036 and is still called Peace and Quiet, Yachtsman Deluxe.

Any product that has lasted that long virtually unchanged must be good however I haven't fired the motor yet to know how good it is. I do know it would be next to impossible with the Universal 5424 to install the portside engine bay wall with the engine in. It was hard enough with the engine out because the contact cement means you have to align it perfectly before you touch it to the wall because you can't tweak it even an 1/8 of an inch once contact is made. The finished engine bay looked better than when the boat was new. Shame on me for not taking any pictures but we installed the engine within minutes of doing the engine bay walls. I still have the top and front wall to do since they are removable. Once I have completed the entire project and the engine is running I will take pictures and try to figure how to post them.

Bet you never thought I would get this far after basically ignoring the boat for 16 years? I probably paid more in storage fees that I could sell her for. But selling her after all the mods I have done over the past 30 odd years is not very likely.

Hope this info helps,

Keith on Camelot (the only Allmand 34 in existence)
