Given that nice, tubeless compatible off-pavement tires are fast approaching $100 apiece, it's always nice to remember that the VERY solid Bruce Gordon Rock and Roads are still $57 apiece with free shipping.  I just got a box of 4.  I set them up tubeless on Stans Rapid 30 rims, which was a snap.  They measure 44.5mm on these 30mm (outside width) rims.  I went to recycle the box, and found an "I (heart) Rock and Roads" pin taped inside the box.  Bruce Gordon was nice to me!

A good reminder! R&R's have been on my short list for trying out a while now... I was just on Bruce's blog last night, looks like he's had a recent bike accident and is going to be laid up a while.

I stopped in at Bruce's shop about 2 years ago and he was great, an amazing craftsman and interesting guy... And he was nice to me!

I hope he has a speedy recovery! And maybe the 650b R&R's would be fun on my Bombadil this fall... :)

I'm going to run the Rock and Roads on my Rawland Stag after I wear out my Soma Cazaderos in another month or two.  The Cazaderos come in at a very similar price point (about $55 online) and similar width.  I *really* like the Cazaderos for mixed surface rides here in the PNW, especially at that price.  They're not marketed as being tubeless ready (although certainly people have set them up that way successfully), so I run them with tubes.  I'll set up the Rock and Roads tubeless on PL23s.

...still mad he failed to stock up on PL23s before they were discontinued

I'm curious: what pressure are you running those tires at?

First time out I went to 40 in back and 35 in front. I'm going to run them 5psi softer next time. Our east bay clay is hard and bumpy in summer

Bill, I see you have taken the front rack off.  Did you ride it with a bag when you had it on?  If so, how was the handling?

The geometry of the 59cm Niner RLT9 is virtually identical to a 58cm Rivendell Atlantis. The handling with a handlebar bag is similar to that. I don't pretend to have the nuanced vocabulary to expound on deep subtleties but I can say it handled really well.
