After I placed the new/valid .DLLs in my c:\, I tried to restart in MS-DOS
mode so that I could rename and copy said .DLLs. While machine was
restarting, just after SB16 Emulation was loaded, I received this: "runtime
error R6009, -not enough space for environment.".
I have over 3 Gig of HD space left. I then was forced to restart again and
attempted to open the MS-DOS prompt from within Windows. Arrrgggg!! No
MS-DOS Prompt!! It has disappeared from my Start/Programs list!! So, I ran
"c:\command" from the Run box and at that point my MS-DOS prompt appeared
with the command run successfully. I then restarted and manually (F8)
brought up the Start-Up Options screen. After selecting boot to "Command
Prompt", I was able to Rename/Copy the selected .DLLs.
But, I still receive the runtime error R6009 when trying to restart in
MS-DOS Mode and my MS-DOS Prompt button is still gone. What in the heck has
happened.
As you can see, I have come to yet another impasse and request help. I
greatly appreciate the tremendous amount of support from everyone. Thank
you all very much.

By the way, I followed the advise of "TB". Thanks a million TB!!!!!!

Try shortening your SET (environment variables) entries
in autoexec.bat and/or 'Exit To Dos.pif' (found in c:\windows)
properties.

Just make a new shortcut to C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM and drag it
to your Start menu.

See above.

Following other post , how about increasing the environment space?

The DOS command for this is in config.sys
I have not used this for years since dual booting DOS/Win95 systems

SET COMSPEC=<drive/path>\command.com /P /E:256

common values 256 or 512 very rarely needed 768 or 1024

well read it here
http://www.robvanderwoude.com/index.html

http://vernon.frazee.net/ms-dos/6.22/help/command.htm

The R6009 is just a catch all error code produced by apps written
commonly using MS development tools like MS C/C++
