We are circulating this proposal to JewishGen researchers investigating the genealogy of the Jews from ZYCHLIN and neighboring towns.
In May 2019 we organized a visit to Poland to observe the anniversary of the murder of the Jews of GOMBIN and GOSTYNIN during the Holocaust. Twenty-five Jewish descendants participated in the Gombin-Gostynin Commemoration, which included memorial ceremonies in both towns and at the Chelmno extermination camp. The visit was organized by the US-based Gombin Society in cooperation with the towns’ municipalities, local civil groups, and three museums in Plock, Konin and Chelmno. In both towns, it was the first time that the memory of their lost Jewish communities was invoked in formal public events. A documentary on the visit is now being produced by Polish filmmakers. Upon request, we can send you more details about the experience, including translations of some of the reports that appeared in the Polish press.
During the visit, we developed contacts for a more ambitious project TO COMMEMORATE THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIQUIDATION OF THE REGION’S GHETTOS AND THE DEPORTATION OF THE JEWS TO THEIR DEATH AT CHELMNO.
On the basis of our experience, we envisage a 5-DAY VISIT THAT WOULD TAKE PLACE IN THE SPRING OF 2022, with participation of descendants from the Jews of several neighboring shtetls, including ZYCHLIN.
We anticipate that, in addition to the formal memorial ceremonies, the 80th Anniversary Commemoration Trip will include guided tours of the towns, guided visits to the Chelmno camp and other regional museums, a symposium with historians and researchers, a workshop with representatives of Jewish institutions in Poland, and social and cultural activities with local Polish civil groups.
We are approaching the Jewish descendants of the region’s shtetls well in advance in order to gauge the level of interest and establish the organizational basis for the project. Below, you will find two straightforward questions. If you are interested, please return your responses to the indicated email address.
We would also like to invite you to share this announcement with relatives, friends, and other descendants of the ZYCHLIN Jews.
With best wishes,
Leon Zamosc (Gombin descendant), San Diego, California
Moshe Zaideman (Gostynin descendant), Kiryat Motzkin, Israel
