Hello,
I have finally updated yWriter as I had to update my computer to windows 11 ... which meant an update from the old to the new interface. Now, when opening a scene, the default mode is overwrite instead of insert. Not all the time but in about 50% of the time and changes sometimes without INSERT when I use the mouse to click on a word not at the end or with the right mouse button (e.g. if using Grammarly).
The problem is that it is not consistent, but random. Maybe it is possible to add a visual indicator of the INSERT status? Maybe even with a red background when in override mode ...
Best regards,
Markus

That won't be a yWriter issue as it cannot switch from insert to overwrite by itself. There's no code in the program to do that.

When it's using overwrite instead, can you run Wordpad and see if that's also in overwrite mode? yWriter uses the same text component as Wordpad.

It's a Grammarly issue. I've not changed yWriter7 or Windows 10 (apart from ongoing updates) and the insert/overwrite problem started 6 months ago for me. It's bloody annoying! I'm now very careful to check before accepting a change.
Looking forward to knowing how to be grammatically correct without external aids!

Thank you for the quick answers.
My other Laptop has windows 11 (but 23H2) and uses the 7.1.3.0 version (the old GUI one) and it has no trouble with Grammarly. I guess the rich text component is not the same for both?!? (Also, there is no wordpad with that new windows 11 out of the box anymore 24H2, only on the older 23H2).
I will try to install the older 7.1.3.0 on the new computer and before explicitly activate wordpad on that windows 11 and report on the results. (But that will take at least until Tuesday.)
There was a second reason for inquiring for such function. I have an older backup laptop which has half sized DEL and INS keys above the single height double width enter key. About every five lines, I accidentally hit INS instead of enter and wreck accidentally havock. So a visual indicator of the insertion mode would be nice. One would think that if there is a way to show that one is on bold state, it should be possible to show the overwrite state. But after digging through the documentation, there seems no obvious way but to insert a letter and check if the size increases or not ...
Thank you

After some more digging, maybe it is connected to the clipboard handling which seems different on Windows 24H2 ...

It should use the same component in both versions - but it's always possible windows replaced the wordpad text control in an update.

Thank you, I think I can confirm that the windows 11 version is the culprit.
I used my daughter's Laptop with Windows 24H2: Lot's of problems with Grammarly and insert mode (also for normal typing), and this one with 23H2 and also the most recent 7.1.5.2, which is all fine. Indeed, this looks like Microsoft is to blame. So a known bug then, caused by Windows 11 24H2.
Also, the newest 24H2 has removed wordpad completely, with no way to install it at all apart from copying an old exe.

There's a program called yEdit2 on my site which is a basic text editor that supports RTF.

Probably better with notepad++ though.
