yWriter 7 beta is up, and I'd like to know what people think.

http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter7_Beta.html

There aren't any amazing new features, but YW7 should fix all the problems with highlighting and formatting which people experienced in the YW6 project format.

I've converted all my novels and shorts to the YW7 format, and that's all I've been using for the past 4-6 weeks. (Maybe 40 projects in total.)

I have also fixed many bugs and annoyances with export to epub/mobi/latex. I don't know whether anyone but me actually uses these features, but it used to lose settings and forget which exporter you were using.

For the technically minded, a big chunk of yWriter's Windows-only code has been moved into dotnet standard libraries, which I can use on the mac, IOS, Android and Linux/Mono in future. (There's still a lot of Windows-only code, but it's a start.)

The main application is now compiled with Dotnet 4.6.2, which is why it's Windows 7 or later only. No more Vista or XP.

It's also a LOT faster with many everyday tasks - loading/saving, exporting, search/replace, for example. And I've added 'Match whole word only' to the global search/replace, which is proving really handy.

There are still bugs, and I'm sure some features are missing or broken. I'm not after bug reports yet, I just want to make sure the main feature (conversion between yw5/6/7 formats) works for everyone.

Notes:

DO NOT USE it on your existing projects. Take a copy of an existing project and test it on the copy.

It will run on Windows 7 or later.
It should open, use and save YW5, YW6 and YW7 projects transparently (no importing or conversion required). It will also import YW2/3/4 projects.

After you've loaded a YW6 project (for example), you can go into Project - Project Settings - MISC Settings (tab), and from there you can change the current project version. Selecting a different version (e.g. YW5) and then clicking Save will create a YW5 version of the project in the same folder as the YW6 project you were editing. (You will now be editing the YW5 version, not the YW6 version.)

This allows conversion between all three supported project versions: YW5, YW6 and YW7.

After conversion, the new project should load/save/work properly in yWriter5 and/or yWriter6. I've tested it on all of my novels, and they worked fine.

Cheers

Thanks for all your findings - I won't reply to each individually, but I will test everything.

If you can email the log file to spac...@gmail.com that would really help. It might show why the RTF files weren't created. (Was the project on local storage, or a cloud drive?)

I've had a lot of trouble converting between ANSI and UTF in the past. I'd love to standardise on UTF, but I don't want to lose all the special characters people have in their existing projects.

Cheers

The log file is on the way. I always use local storage.

There is a new aspect: Meanwhile, I found a bunch of non-confirmed message windows (the Alt backup folder issue) in the background. Is it possible, they remained when I closed the yWriter windows? So the yW5 export fault could be caused by more than one instance of yWriter running on the same project.

With all message windows closed, I repeated the experiment, and the conversion from yWriter7 to yWriter5 went well (except the metadata encoding issue: now the special characters seem to be really lost). The .rtf files seem to be generated correctly with all special characters and formatting.

Simon, the exe file won't open in my PC. It's considered an unsafe program. I know it's okay but my PC doesn't. Is there a workaround this or should I just stick with version 6 until it's past the beta stage?

Hi

Does it say why it's considered unsafe? It shouldn't be any different to yWriter6 in that regard.

You may need to change your OS settings to allow untrusted applications to run.

Have you tried right-clicking the EXE and selecting OPEN and then allowing it to run?

A lot of third party developers do not have the resources to buy all the ‘your allowed to sell on Windows’ coupons to bypass those checks.

I'm guessing the error message is generated by Windows Smartscreen, but I use that myself and have no problem running any of my own code.

I know I'm supposed to buy an SSL certificate to sign my apps, but the number of times I've read about stolen certificates and spoofing and so on, I really don't think it's worth it. I believe it offers a false sense of security.

Those of you who've installed it, can you open the C:\Program Files (x86)\yWriter7\ folder, and delete every DLL file starting with 'System' (In other words, System*.dll)

(MAKE CERTAIN you're inside the yWriter7 folder first.)

Then run yWriter7, and see if you get the same error.

I've got a feeling the installer is including a bunch of files which are only required on Android and IOS, and those might be the reason Windows is complaining.

I used the zip file from the beginning (unpacked it into my user profile and started \bin\yWriter7.exe), so there was only a warning message unknown publisher on startup.

Now, I deleted all system*.dll files. The program seems to work anyway, and the unknown publisher warning does not show up anymore.

Chapter proofing works in yWriter5 mode, but yWriter7 to yWriter5 file conversion is broken again (RTF files uncomplete and empty). I send you another logfile by email.

Hi

Don't forget YW7 is just a beta. I don't want anyone upgrading from v5 or v6, and I only released a beta for people who like to test new programs out.

Can I know the new features of YW7?

The only new feature so far is a new YW7 project format, and the ability to switch a project between YW5, 6 and 7 formats easily.

Everything else is a behind-the-scenes rewrite. I'm moving as much Windows-only code as possible into libraries which are compatible with Mac, IOS, Android and Mono/Linux.

Not to hijack a thread and not to sound like a whiny fan boy, but do you have an idea as to when yWriter 7 will be mostly ready for prime time? I am only asking because of the RTF formatting bug that is present in 6.0.2.5 where it loses the formatting when saving, exiting and restarting and reopening a scene. I lose centering, italics, just about everything.

Hi

I've written 2-3 novels using yWriter 7, with no issues. There are still a couple of missing features, but I'm in the middle of moving house so I'm not even trying to work on it (or my novels) until the dust settles.

I converted an yWriter5 project file into UTF-8 and let yWriter7 load it -- problem solved (by the way: yWriter5 loads UTF8 encoded projects as well and displays them the right way, but saves them ANSI encoded). Just downloaded the beta, so I'm guessing that's the 7.0.0.4 version.

I'm running Win 10.

My antivirus flagged it as potentially unsafe, sent the file for evaluation, and returned an all-clear, after which I was able to install it -- when I clicked on the More button in the Win 10 "this looks fishy" warning.

The first thing I noticed on opening was that the home screen menu text did not fit into the tabs, and the new project wizard's text boxes were dinky. I use 150% font size on my display, not sure if that may be part of what's being weird.

I'll share more as I run through it.

Hi Shay

I use 125% myself, but will check the scaling settings in the UI.

Not happy about all the warnings, but there's little I can do about it. yWriter contains an option to back up over FTP, which probably looks fishy, and even worse, you can configure the inbuilt SMTP server to send an email with your project as an attachment. (Both are features from my basic library of routines which I use across many of my programs.)

I do love your program. I tried using Scrivener and found it difficult and that your program is so much better.

Hi Simon,

I transferred my current project to yW7 from 6 Mostly good so far (I do like it better than 6) Issues I have come across so far
-UI scaling is adversely affected by windows scaling (anything above 175% makes menus in yW7 pretty unreadable)

-In scenes I have some text at normal spacing other paragraphs at 1.5 in the same scene. It won't let me turn the 1.5 into normal and if I select all and crtl 5 to turn it all into 1.5 spacing the single spaced text goes to 1.5 while what already was 1.5 added another 1.5! Is there a way I can just reset it?

-And what has YWriter got against apostrophe's? In Yw7 it has removed them and then when I replace them it says the word is spelt wrong and won't let me say it's a custom word.

-when I downloaded the dictionary it didn't unpack it even when i clicked said OK in the pop-up window

Keep up the good work

Cheers

I'm using a pretty big font now (12 pt) so I will check what scaling I've set the menus to.

I will add a scene setting somewhere to enforce a line spacing for the project. (yWriter isn't meant to support that kind of formatting, but it sounds like it's got stuck from an externally-created file.)

I'm guessing they're smart apostrophes?  If you add one to the 'allowed characters' in the spell checker settings it shouldn't flag them as errors. Not sure why they're disappearing though.

Will check the dictionary unpacking. It might be trying to put it in the program folder, where it won't have permission.

Cheers

New Beta of yWriter7 uploaded - fixes both the issues you mentioned, and streamlines the setup of word lists/dictionaries.

I've also coded a feature which adds all locations/items/characters into the custom dictionary before a spell check. No more character names and locations in annoying red.

Aha, I thought of Fantasy authors too.

The names of characters/items/locations are added just before a spell check takes place, but they're not saved to the custom dictionary permanently.

If you change the name halfway through the novel, then those spelled the old way will all be red instead.

Good day Simon, thank you for another awesome product!
Not sure if you are aware, your website seems to be having some problems.  The registration page comes up blank, the "yWriter7Full.exe" and I managed to get into the actual folder on the server and noticed that the file name is "yWriter7Upd.exe", although it still took a long time to find the right file to upgrade from version 7.0.0.4 to 7.0.1.1  :)

Just thought I would let you know...
I also need to work out how to upload the dictionaries, doesn't seem to be the same as version 6.  I keep getting "key not present"...

Again thanks for your ongoing dedication to a brilliant product.

The dictionary setup changed a lot with the recent yw7 - it now imports all the text files from the Dict folder, excluding the 2+2 and a couple of other known 'readme' type files in 6-dicts. It's also recursive, going into any folders it finds.

I'm seriously considering including the us & uk dictionaries with the software. The license for 6-dicts appears to permit this.

PS the Mac version will use that OS's inbuilt spelling and grammar check ;-)  I was testing this yesterday.

I'm also about to release an alpha of SalesScanner for the mac, in case any of you have a need for an Amazon/Smashwords/Google Play ebook sales analyser.  (It can consolidate your books from different retailers and present the sales daily/weekly and so on. Freeware, already out on PC.)

Hello, I downloaded the latest beta version of yWriter7 7.0.1.2 and my file is acting weird. When I try to create a new scene or open an existing one, a window pops up with the message "Couldn't open any more scene windows". However, when I try to close the project or exit the application, the message "please close all editor windows first" pops up and then the scene editors for the scenes that I tried to open or create earlier pop up.

I then cannot exit these windows even when I click the "close" button, and I have to use task manager to force close yWriter7. This even happens if I start a new project.

Is this a problem that has happened before? I'll watch this thread and create a separate file with another application in the meantime.

Excuse the double post, since there doesn't look to be an option to edit my previous post, but I downloaded and extracted the .zip into my yWriter application folder, instead of using the .exe installer, and my previous problems have disappeared.

I'll keep my previous post up for future reference and for anyone who encounters the same problems.

Sounds like an essential file was missing from the installer, but present in the zip.  (My program uses Dotnet 462 and a couple of extra libraries. Maybe dotnet 462 was not installed on the target PC?)

I have been using version 7 on PC with no significant issues but I also use the Android app (v1.0.44 – from Google Play Store (in UK)).
The app can’t see the version 7 files but if I change the file extension to .wy6 it can see and open a version 7 file and work with it.
I assume you are planning to update the app as and when version 7 leaves Beta.
Any planned date for that please?
Regards

There is an Alpha version of yWriter Android on the play store which enables yw7 loading.  I will promote it to beta now.

Cheers
