Hello - just want to introduce myself. «Ex»-musician Norway based. Got a TX816 and a DMP11. Have recently updated my PSU with the Synclav/Synhouse thingy. Works ok, but the transformer is rather noisy?  - doesn’t bother me much tho.. might look into that later. My main interest here is to learn more about possible upgrades and find a working replacement for my extinct Sounddiver (that doesn’t seem to like my new - yet now old - 64 bit win7 computer. You know the thing with Sounddiver was its ability to do sounddesign on all 8 TF1s for one sound - on one screen.. imho the main strenght about the TX816 lies in its possibilities to use the modules as partials for one single patch.

Cheers from Norway

Welcome to the group! It’s pretty quiet here these days.

A lot of people have reported that the Synhouse PSU is a bit noisy. My TX816 was serviced here in the UK by Andy “Synth Prof” Jury. Instead of fitting the Synhouse unit, he actually rebuilt the PSU himself with off the shelf parts and it runs silently. Might be worth giving him a look if you decide to replace it.

Regarding the editor, as you can imagine for such a niche and vintage unit, there isn’t much that will work on a modern computer. The best option is likely to be Patch Base, which has a dedicated TX816 editor. I don’t think I ever saw the Sounddiver software, so couldn’t compare, but it’s worth a look…

Other options include using something like OPS7 or DEXED but these will only allow you to work on one TF1 at a time.

Failing that, you could try running Sounddiver on a virtual machine? VMware Fusion or the free VirtualBox from Sun Microsystems would do the trick, so long as you had a copy of Windows that supports Sounddiver.

Not sure how much help that is, but good luck :-)

Do you have any more info on the parts used? I'v got a noisy PSU on my TX816 and would be happy to tame these noises.

Thanks in advance!

All I can tell you is what Andy put on the job sheet…

"Remove old Yutaka SMPS and mains input filter board. Fit new modern 125W SMPS, type MeanWell RT-125C to chassis. Install new DC wiring to distribution bus. Move old US mains cable and replace with standard C14 mains inlet. As mains switch part of old filter board standard DPDT mains switch fitted in it’s place.”

Andy said he had to custom modify the PSU but I am unsure what he did.

Andy can be found here…

Regards,

Rob

Thanks! I will look into those TX816 editors.

On the PSU-noise: It may be possible to install a torodial transformer some guy on FB told me. It will require some additional electronics tho’ - and more fuses. Personally I am not going to waste any time on that now. My main concern is to get my sounds back into the synth (as I also installed batteryholders on my TF1s).

Best

Thanks a bunch, that's exactly what I was looking for. I guess I know what to do for this summer's end!

Cheers,

FWIW, I’d go with the 125W RT-125C rather than the RT-65C which is 65W. The original PSU was 100W so the 125C is a much closer match. The 65W unit will likely have to work harder, generate more heat and need a larger heatsink to reduce strain on the components.

Both my tech’s agree that the 125W unit is a much better option long term.

Just my 2 cents ;-)

Rob.
