Hey,

Does anyone have any experience trying to install multiple version of indesign and uCreate on one PC. I need to be able to connect/upload to two different servers with different versions of uProduce and Indesign Server, and make sure the files i create are compatible with the relevant install.

I need Indesign 2018 + uCreate 9.2.1 (package and upload manually)
And also Indesign 2020 + uCreate 9.8.2 (connect to uProduce from indesign)

I uninstalled all my indesigns and installed 2018 + 9.2.1, however after reinstalled 2020 and trying to run the 9.8.2 installer, it wants to just upgrade 9.2.1 to 9.8.2.

Cheers!

I had similar difficulty recently with having Indesign 2020 and 2021 on my PC. When I updated to uCreate version 10, the install 'attached' to Indesign 2021 which worked correctly, but Indesign 2020 was non-functional. I was never able to get both versions of Indesign to work concurrently, only one at a time. In my case it wasn't a major issue as I really only needed to have 2020 working in order to connect to uProduce. 2021 had been recently installed for dev purposes.

uCreate Print is designed to be installed only on one instance of InDesign per computer. When you run the installer it will always try to install to the latest version of InDesign that it finds.

Anyhow, I am also working with two uProduce servers with different versions of uProduce and InDesign. I always keep my desktop InDesign to the lowest version that I have on the servers since the newer InDesign can always open an older document, but not the other way around. XMPie uPlan is also backwards compatible with older versions.

Also, I use the package and upload method on all servers. The only problem with this is that I can't use any new features that are only available in the later uPlan/uProduce version.

Of course, you could arrange to get the older version upgraded to avoid all the problems.

Damian-

You might want to investigate using Virtual Machines to support multiple versions of InDesign and XMPie.

Personally, I use VMware and I actually have about 9 different versions of InDesign (CS6 - CC 2021) and XMPie running on my laptop. Our customers are running several versions of the software and we have a handful of legacy applications which still need ongoing support. I've heard of other folks using Parallels on the Mac to support multiple version of InDesign.

The tricky part is the licensing. Since the license can only run on one machine (yes, each of the VMs is considered a machine in terms of licensing), so we have to deactivate and reactivate the keys when switching between environments. It is much easier and faster to switch environments if you purchase an additional license from XMPie Sales for both instances.

Be careful. There are NO downloads for CC 2018. I made the mistake of uninstalling it from my host machine a couple of years ago not realizing that I didn't have the installer files to reinstall into a fresh VM. I scoured the internet and contacted Adobe several times, but I never found a download link.

I strongly suggest to spend the time/effort/money to update/upgrade/migrate your legacy software to the most current version. There have been a boatload of new features added since 9.2.1.

In an emergency, you can find old InDesign version installers here: https://prodesigntools.com/

Thanks Ekotnik - I do have a hyper-v already set up I can use, bit of a pain but will do the job!

Yea thats the site i found 2018 on Couch, after realising it wasnt in the older versions any more. Weird that you need an external site to find the downloads own Adobe's website!

Thank you for the link. I'm sure that will come in handy in my travels.
