Hi Andy.

I'm unable to install XLP 3.18 on UBuntu 24.04 machine. XXE installs fine, but XLP does not. The messages I get ion the terminal say

Part 2/6: install the Personal Edition of the XMLmind XML Editor
chown: missing operand after ‘/home/ian/Downloads/

and

Part 3/6: install XLingPaper configuration files
chown: missing operand after ‘/.xxe7’

and

chown: missing operand after ‘/.xxe8’

and

Part 4/6: install texlive for XLingPaper files
ln: failed to create symbolic link '/usr/texbinxlingpaper/i386-linux': File exists
Part 5/6: install XXE preferences
Part 6/6: install sample XLingPaper document
tar: /Documents: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Don't know why it looks like there is no file after ~/Downloads/ because that's where I extracted the install compressed file to. And maybe the error in Part 4/6 is because I haven't set up my system to run 32 bit programmes (?).

Could you give some pointers. Thanks very much.

Ian

Sorry, Ian, for the delay in answering this.  There was a recent change to the XLingPaper support email address and I did not know that it would no longer work with this list.

Hi, Ian.

Had you installed XLingPaper before on this Linux system?

What happens if you download and install the configuration only installer from https://software.sil.org/xlingpaper/download/config-only/#linux?  Notice that when running the installer for this one, you do *not* want to use "sudo".

Hi Andy.

No worries, thanks for your reply. There was no previous installation of XLP on this machine, and I had already tried the config only file, just in case it might work, but it didn't. However, seeing your comment about running the config only script without sudo, I tried running the full package script without sudo. This worked! I didn't type sudo but issuing the command still prompted for a sudo password. So for me, following the precise commands on the xlingpaper web page, with sudo, resulted in a chown problem.

Now I've opened an XLP document and tried to export it to pdf, and it tells me XeLaTeX is not installed and to try running the complete installer! Perhaps this is the 32/64 bit issue. Will have a go at resolving that shortly ...

Thanks again.

Ian
