Dear All,
I am writing this email for selfish reasons .Quote Everybody needs his memories
to keep insignificance away End of Quote Attached are 2 photos : Invitation and Photo of 4 of us.
BACKGROUND
I moved to Pudhchery Detergents factory as the Unit Head in Jan 2016 :This was a start up factory . Dets Bar plant was
commisioned in June Qtr 2016 .PP ,Soaps and Distilled Fatty Acid plants were subsequently commissioned .
A Thiru was the Pudhuchery Personnel manager ( 2 other units in addition to Dets Factory).
I moved out to Modern Foods team.in New Delhi in Jan 2000. Atul Bhatia was the next GFM followed by A N Pandyarajan . Pandyrajan has settled down in Pudhuchery .
INVITATION FROM THE DETS UNIT
I was pleasantly surprised to get an Invitation (on 28thSept )from the Unit HR Manager to
attend the Silver Jubilee Celebrations ! I gratefully accepted the invitation .
A Thiru , A N Pandyarajan and I attended the function. We were overwhelmed by the affection shown by the employees.
We thanked all the managers profusely for inviting us. Doc Rajgopal sent me a photo (His spies are everywhere )
FACTORY PERFORMANCE
Our performance was way way above expectations and I got disproportionate credit !
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
The Project team gave us a series of well designed plants ( V K Sharmaji , Jaygopal Chatterjee, late Gautam,Rehani and many others) A Thiru interviewed 7000 odd candidates and selected 400 Skilled /Unskilled workmen !! Thiru had a series
of simple tests including Attitude tests . We trained them. We followed Code of Business Principles .
The Dets Bar was shutdown for 5 weeks by the Chief Inspector of Factories and Boilers. We did not budge from our stand. We were backed to the hilt by Mr Shrikant Bhide,Mr Banga and Mr A Lahiri . Mr Shrikant Bhide presented a case study in Harvard Business School! The team of Managers and Officers did a fantastic job. Mr Bhide sent us experts from
all over for helping us at various stages of start ups.
TOUGH EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT
Pressures from local MLA , Chief Minister , Village groups, Govt Officers issuing Statutory clearnces and demanding
their pound of flesh which we cannot give etc etc . A Thiru handled these pressures and alloowed the rest of the
team to do our jobs. He was tough and fair with employees . He was the clear favorite in the recent function.
Late Mr N Byravan handled similar areas from Projects.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE : AN PANDYARAJAN TO THE RESCUE
During my presentation to Mr K B Dadiseth, he cautioned us that we should not set our selection bar very high.
We might end up selecting the Bennets of the world !(Bennet singlehandedly destroyed Bombay Factory )
After the euphoria in Puduchery , a Union was formed .When I left in Jan 2000 , IR situation was not hunky dory .
Then came our own Tom Cruise . Indeed his mission to set things was difficult. One potential Bennet ( Shankar ) was in the making . Pandyarajan did it in his own inimitable way . That set the tone of healthy Union Management relationships. Pandyarajan has a good sense of humour . When he had a heart attack , he told his boss ` Mr Bhide , At least
I know that I have a heart !' Incidentally Shankar left factory , did law and is a Practising Advocate !
BACK TO A THIRU
Thiru had a good career post HUL : Head ER : TVSE, GM HR Sterlite Copper-------- President , Group HR ,Vedanta
President CHR , JK Group, CHRO : Hatsun Agro and so on. He is now retired . He has to decide on spending time.
My recommendation to him : You know Micro and Macro ,Ground Level to Strategy , So be your own boss.
Cheers
Ramani
