FERPA & open grade book

All - I am presenting CAO/XB to a group of other instructors as part of a "non-traditional assessment" teaching group that I am with here at Western Kentucky U. 

I remember us discussing a while back - does anyone have any information regarding the open grade book as it pertains to FERPA?

A court decided that peer scoring does not violate ferpa.  This was in the context of students exchanging math tests and having them mark answers correct or incorrect.  Students may score, rate, and evaluate other students, so long as grades are not shared. So a 90% on a test is ok, but not the designation of A-. Only the faculty determine grades, and those are not shared. I'm careful to clarify that with the students. So the xb spreadsheet has evaluations, but not grades. There is no open grade book, since grades do not exist until I enter them at the end of the semester.  I don't know which case determined this, but a search for ferpa court case with student or peer evaluation should turn it up.  My computer crashed and the reference is on my backup drive, but I can't look at it right now.

Hi Matthew, we have never met but I follow you and the group, hoping and willing that your efforts to spread CAO/XB andragogy are successful. 

My connection with the group goes back to the early 2000s when I met Roger at an international conference and my methods had similarities to his XB. I went on to directly, successfully apply CAO/XB andragogy in my teaching at University of Auckland NZ. But I was stymied in my efforts to spread  it beyond my own practice by the barriers to institutional and individual professional behaviour-change that you all experience.

I am no longer involved in institutional education but I remain deeply, passionately interested, partly because the behaviours and reflexive perspectives tacitly developed by conventional schooling and polished by universities are arguably hugely influential in the perpetuation of pervasively unproductive, even destructive organisational design and behaviour. I am continually frustrated by the effects of it in my ongoing OD/OB work in NZ SMEs. 

Institutional classroom organisation and performance assessment crucially determine those unquestioned assumptions that underpin subsequent organisational behaviour. 

So more strength and power to your arm and your persuasive efforts to get others to work alongside you to experience CAO/XB, because that is the only way they will “get” what you are talking about.  Then they may be brave enough, with your support, to risk doing it themselves and personally, with their students, experience the revelationary joy of collaborative success.

Thank you. It is nice to hear your voice in the XB forum. I really appreciate your straight to the point answer and the perspective you put it is so clean and clear.

I too think XB is an incredible development tool when it comes to college students. It's unfortunate that it's a bunch of one-on-one or one on institution to attempt implementation.

Hey Matthew!

I always say that the students are providing “suggested grades” which are always a score and not an actual grade. I have about 40% of the grading on my side, and bout 60% on their side. They submit their “suggested grades” to me at midterm and finals, and I compile them, together with my grades into a mid-term and final grade. I’m not doing XB, but the version of CAO that Stacie and David and I wrote about in our book. So I realize its different than what you are doing.
