Dear all,
I am at ISAGA 2019 (International Simulation and Gaming Association) 50th anniversary conference and the keynote speaker yesterday posed a question that i have not really considered before.
We all think about, and know the answer to the question: “What do we want students to learn?” But I have not previously framed that in terms of the question he asked -
“What do you want people to DO differently as a result of their simulation learning experience?”
So here is my initial answer to his question

Serious games for learning

It’s about what happens afterwards. What will be different? Because participation in the  experience must initiate something to have been worthwhile.”

So what do we want students to DO after CAO/MLM? My first thoughts -

  • Manage their future learning activities as if they are managing the business of their own learning - planning enacting checking.testing and acting - etc. [to be further refined]
  • Engage with learning as an activity that is more/other than simply acquiring knowledge/grades
  • Be an interactive/interdependent learner working awarely with others to enhance the learning outcomes for all involved
What can you add to the list?
Am i coming to this late, and its been so obvious that such statements as these are central to your introductions to XB?
Looking forward to your ideas.
Regards
Elyssebeth

Attached are some docs I have developed (or students have, or Matt V) to address this aspect.

Personally, I feel that we MUST play the long game in XB, that post-class outcomes are really what immersive learning is all about. Often during the immersion, learners are "in the weeds", and it is not until they leave the experience that they realize how they have grown.

Our core purposes doc serves to remind students what we feel ALL sections of XB address. The student views doc is what that section felt they "saw" happening.

Thank so much Eric.
I knew there must be some documents :-) and feel a bit foolish that I have not thought about documenting intended outcomes in this way until now.
Will read them with interest.
