Hi everyone,

I know it is short notice, but this weekend will be the WV Chess Association open chess championship.  As part of that, I have decided to add a Tom Berquist Scholastic tournament.

The format will be 3-4 rounds G/45. Depending on the registration numbers we will determine if there will be 3 or 4 rounds.  Entry fee is $10.  Trophy to the top 3 players.  It will be at the Huntington YMCA (Old Huntington high school).

If any of the scholastic players want to play in the open, which is two days, they are welcome too.  I am attaching both announcements for your reference.

Sorry for the late notice.  I am also working on a tournament for Oct 14.

Thanks,

Although you’re running this as a separate event, but since you’re calling it a Thomas Bergquist scholastic and it’s on the same day as the state championship, I thought I’d point out that the conditions of the state championship are written into the bylaws. I’d rather there not be an event that could draw players away from the state championship. Or at the very least, not use the same name and make it clear it’s not part of the state championship.

You’ve also misspelled his name.

I'll fix the spelling. I'm running it as a scholastic so I don't think it would interfere with the state championship. It would only be for the scholastic.

In theory, I could see some scope for interference, since the state junior champion is usually the highest eligible finisher at the state tournament. I can envision a scenario where kids that might compete for that instead drop into the scholastic tournament.

That said, I don’t think it’s a bylaw violation to hold a 2nd tournament with different eligibility criteria at the same time/place.

It's a separate section not an event. I feel as though the ones that are strong enough to compete with the adults will.

I don't see what the issue is. John Boylin will be competing in the open.

A second section is a violation of the bylaws conditions for the state tournament. And as a player I’d rather not deal with distractions of a different section or event with different start/finish times.

I’m skeptical that it would constitute a distraction, but if it’s counter to the bylaws, we’re not empowered to gainsay them.

We've done this before, albeit infrequent.

Call it another event or section. If there are scholastic players that want to play and don't want to play in the open, they will be able to.
