Hello Sara.  I'm not familiar with the syntax and features of google
groups.  Is there a way for a group member (not the group holder) to
change the settting so by default I reply to the group rather than to
the sender of a message to the group?

The default is now that you are replying to the group. I've seen all your Milk messages for example.

There is a setting in the messages to reply individually or to group before you send messages Charles.
It is kristy morgan by the way

Yes, but this is because I change the address in the Send-To field from
the original sender of a message to the group address. No doubt I'll
fforget to do the switch some time.  So, how can I set the default to
the group address?

You just replied to the group right now. I think the setting you're talking about only applies to individual posts.

Hello Kristy.  We've never met before, but I'm pleased to make your acquaintance.

Yes, but as I said, i have to remove the individual sender's address in that field and then replace it with the group address.  So yes I reply to the group, but not by default, and I'd like it to be the default address.  So when someone sends to the group and I reply to that message, I'd like the group address to be the default and not the original sender's address.  Compris? <quizzical smile>

I'll check the settings. I think you'd need a Google account to do it yourself.

Okay, thanks Sara.

I wonder if the several others who have posted to the list here change the address in the Send-To field, or do they use the standard keystroke in Outlook to "Reply-All" rather than "Reply-To-Sender".  At this point I'm using Thunderbird.

So, with this message, I just pressed Control-R for reply, and it went to the group address. The global setting defaults as I thought so that replies go to the whole group, and I checked your member settings, and there’s no way to individually change it. If you post from the Google Groups web site, you can choose to reply to only the author, but as I know you’re using email, then it should just default to the group address.

You can try an experiment next time and do the reply-all command, usually control-shift-R, and then check what address comes up. But everyone’s replies ought to work the same as mine do, so I’m rather puzzled at the moment.

I use the standard Reply command and it works fine for me, but yes. Reply-all might work

I think when you come to reply to group do you just press enter? I am going to give this a try

I couldn’t find the reply to group button on this message.

For Thunderbird I've always pressed Control r.  When posting to an individual it replys to that person; and, when replying to a list it has generally replied to a list message and not to the individual.  I'll check Thunderbird's keyboard commands.  Sorry to cclutter up the list, well in a way but not reallyhaha.

This is important though. Actually, Thunderbird used to have a control-L command I think for replying to lists specifically, but I don't know if that's still the case.

How about pressing shift control and r would that work?

So, the Google Help topic on this specifically says that it’s best to use the Reply-all command when you want to reply by email to the group.

You learn something new every day, I guess.

In Outlook you just simply do your normal control-R and you are replying to the group.

Yes. I have the same result in Outlook here, but I guess they counsel you to use the reply-all command because other email clients behave differently? Who knows?
