It's September and the raptor migration will soon be in full swing. As is the case every year, I plan to visit the Castlegar hawk-watch site 2 or 3 times between now and mid-October. Weather permitting, I am planning a visit next Sunday, September 7. Many of you have visited the site before and will appreciate that the more eyes the better. The ridge along which the birds pass is quite high and the birds can be hard to spot initially. Most have to be identified through a scope. But before the scopes come into play, the 'eyes' have to see the bird flying by.

As usual, we meet at the park'n'ride parking lot between the airport and the Kootenay River bridge at 930. Surveys run for 4 hours, from 10:00 to 2:00. Bring a chair and a lunch.

I will check the weather later in the week, if it's not suitable we will have to postpone. It's not worth sitting there for 4 hours if nothing is flying by!

If you do plan to join me, please let me know,

Thanks,
Gary

The weather for Sunday is looking a bit mixed. Some cloud won't be an issue as long as it doesn't rain. I plan to go ahead with the survey and will meet interested people at the park'n'ride at 930. If we find the weather is not conducive to migration, we don't have to stay the full 4 hours.

Since our first attempt was a bust, I'm keen to give it another try. Unfortunately, we have some unsettled weather coming. I don't have a lot of faith in longer term forecasts, however, early indications are that we may get some good weather between the 19th and the 23rd. Not all of those days are on a weekend, but at this time of year we have to take the weather when it comes. If you're interested in joining us next time, keep those dates in mind. I'll update as it gets a bit closer and the forecast is a bit more reliable.

The weather forecast seems to be a moving target! The unsettled weather predicted a couple of days ago is apparently not going to materialize. But then the forecast changes depending upon which site you check! Environment Canada, (probably the most reliable), says sunny and warm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The weather network says partly cloudy with showers on Thursday! Both agree it goes off a bit after Thursday. Thursday is better for me, but I could do Wednesday if necessary. I'll look at the forecast again tomorrow night and make a final decision.

I've decided to come down for a survey on Thursday, (Sept 18). Hoping to have a few extra sets of eyes to assist. Please let me know if you plan to join me.

Thanks,
Gary

It seems we have enough to go on Thursday after all! See you at 930 at the park and ride.

A good friend of mine has just had a heart attack. I will be driving his wife to the hospital in Vernon or Kelowna, don't know which one yet. I won't be able to do the hawk watch tomorrow. If I can reschedule I'll let you know.

Organising this outing is turning out to be quite an ordeal!!

Fortunately, my friend is OK, not a heart attack after all. We drove his wife down to Trail last night and stayed overnight. This morning they were told, he was OK, had a viral infection, and sent him home! So we brought them both back again. All is good.

Now back to the hawk watch business. For now, our last opportunity is Saturday, (sorry Chris). We should have at least, Paul, Carolee and Barbara. Others more than welcome! Kelsey? Laura? ......

930 at the the park and ride. Bring lunch and a chair.

Hi Gary,
That's a great resolution to your friend's situation. We will be on there on Saturday. Looking at the forecast for rain on Sunday, it occurs to me that Monday, a clear day following rain, would be ideal. However, I understand this hawk watch has been hard enough to schedule so we're prepared to show up on Saturday.
