Hello,
I'm a part of an Information visualization group of Computer Science/Design/Information Technology Masters students at Sweden's KTH. As a part of an Information Visualization group project, we want to make a visualization for small scale wind power generation that can be used to visualize and monitor wind turbine's energy production. Specifically, we are targeting the new wind power project in Tanzania. We would like to make a dashboard to be used by engineers to monitor their turbines and make another tool for farmers to better understand their local wind turbine. We would love any information we could get about how to proceed, such as what details would be helpful with Hugh Piggott wind turbine monitoring and wind turbine monitoring in general.
Thanks!
Nick Anderson

Hi,
Sounds interesting.
When we discussed this with the WE measurement working group we had some main parameters to measure. These are:

Wind speed
Wind direction
Voltage (DC) wind output
Current (DC) wind output
Rotational speed of the turbine

Other parameters which might be useful are:
Temperature (of bearings or stator coils)
Battery voltage
Battery current
Battery temperature
Volatge (AC) if fed into grid
Current (AC) if fed into grid

Those are the main parameters (that I can think of at the moment).
Converting that information into a useful dashboard which shows maintenance issues and operation starts to get a bit harder, but lots of room for different ideas.

I'd say that you want to check that there has been some current from the wind turbine every day, the battery voltage should be within a set range, the daily/weekly/monthly energy output for the turbine should be shown, along with any historical data.

Please check out the Energy Monitoring CMS from the open energy monitor project: http://emoncms.org/

Regards,

Matt

There was a student in Toulouse that made an Arduino shield for a data logger. His work is still in french, but you can guess some of the stuff form the forms and circuits he used. The content is online at

      Cheers
