Dear Winchester Wheelfriends,

We would like to start the paceline ride on Thursdays on this coming Thursday the 5th of June. This is an A+ level ride that requires skills rotating safely on a paceline at speeds over 25 mph. You should be able to hold your line and keep the speed constant. Any movement that could alter your line and speed (drinking, eating, standing on the pedals, stretching, etc.) should be done when you are at the end of the line. If you need to stand on the pedals on a hill, you should let riders behind you know by flicking both elbows. You should also be aware of riders around you. No half wheeling. Following these recommendations makes the ride safe.

Here is the route https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46464002. This is a drop ride, so if you get dropped, you should know the way back. If you get dropped (I get dropped often), please don't take it personal. That's how you get better, by pushing yourself.

Ride starts at D. G. Cooley Elementary School in Berryville at 6:00 PM.

Please, let me know if you are coming by email. Thank you!

Ricardo

I have to say that I love the paceline rides but I’m not fond of this route at all. Being on Summit Point Dr at 6:10PM puts us at risk. With a long line of riders single file at speed and constant flow of very impatient commuters trying to get home around us is a little scary. There are so many other options to reroute this so we could avoid Summit Point at 6PM and hit it in the opposite direction later on. I have also thrown out the idea of moving the paceline to the White Hall route. Just something to think about in the future. Summit Point Dr has become just like Middle Rd or Back Mtn Rd. Maybe a good topic for the next meeting.

Thanks,
Jason Waymire

Hey Jayson

not that I would go, as there is no way I can follow you guys this year.
However, I am curious about your suggestion to do this at the White Hall route. Maybe there is a different White Hall route, but the one I know (what I was told used to be the Monday ride) is way too hilly and way too "curvy" to have a proper pace line?
Is there another White Hall ride I don't know?

Thx

Santiago

Yes, I was referring to the Monday night White Hall ride. That is what was mentioned last time I brought it up. There are people in this group that have been biking these routes for years. I’m sure one of them has a better option for the paceline. If not we keep it the same. I just know that we are loosing road riders because of safety concerns. If it is possible to help eliminate some of those concerns, great!

Thanks,
Jason Waymire

Jason and all,

I hear you. We can do some other nice route. No problem! Please, share the route via ride with GPS so we can load it onto our bike computers.

I have always toyed with the idea of joining up for the paceline ride with the Panhandle Pedalers on Thursday evenings in order to avoid some of that busy traffic.  It starts at the Liberty gas station in Bardane, WV at 5:30.  Perhaps we can just join up with them?  I am assuming we would have to join PPCC in order to ride with them though.  $15 to join.  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdFmfGZzVj4iJpgdseXZLejG6V4qS0Qx1XCUBgoCq0Bozq_FQ/viewform

Not sure if this is considered "blasphemy" to join another group, but more of an "ecumenical" approach. 😀

Or we can start at 6 pm instead on our own?  5:30 is a little early for some and I have to drive around 50 minutes to get there.  Or ride it on another day?

Here is a copy of the route:

I haven't been on this entire route yet.  It does go through parts of Leetown and Summit Point Rd, but later in the day.  Perhaps it isn't as busy at that time?

Kind Regards,

Kevin Williams

Good morning, all,

Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in here.  Before going to the Panhandle Pedalers paceline ride, why don't you take on the Whitehall ride for test session?  Don't make the first one a drop ride and keep the group together (within reason).  Just a suggestion.  Solicit opinions during/after the ride.  Crossing WV 51 at least will have to be a "truce" on the dropping bit, as it's a busy road most of the time.  The loop is great with a lot of fast pavement.  There are some curves that require attention, but manageable.

I'm sure I've been on all of the roads on the Bardane ride, but not in one, continuous ride.  There are some roads with difficult lines of sight in that area, very similar to Leetown Rd.  Bardane is a long haul from Winchester.

Doug Keim, what do think a good alternate paceline loop would be to the DG Cooley School loop out of Berryville?  (I have to say it's one of my favorite loops, with or without traffic, but I get the concern and am not affected by the traffic volume, esp. outbound.)

Hello Everybody,

Just wanted to make you all aware that the Women’s Group faced a similar traffic related issue in the Berryville Area. To avoid a lot of these busy roads they created a different route starting in Berryville called the Lollipop - here is a link WW Women 28.5 Lollipop.

By changing direction this route takes you in the opposite direction than most of the “rush hour” traffic.

Ride safe

Wolfgang, ah, yes, that's a good loop.  I would agree that this one!  Can still park at DG Cooley and go over like the original loop.  Terrain is a bit flatter than the Whitehall ride.  A good choice for a paceline loop.

Here is a version of this loop starting from DG Cooley.  I am going to test ride it Thursday evening with a 6:00 PM push.  I am not ready (or ever will be) for a 25mph pace, but I will ride this with anyone interested in evaluating it as a paceline loop.  This encompasses aspects of the first version of the paceline ride from the late 1990's into the early 2000's.  Only one way to find out if it works...  Let me know if you'll be out by replying here or to me directly at 540 664 8435.

Thanks,

Ken Tenney

All,

I ride this route 2 to 3 evening a week.   The route has low traffic with the exception of Crums Chuch.  Old Charles Town Rd is closed just west of Long Marsh.  Because of this, traffic has been routed on Crums Church.

Ken,

I am happy to ride it with you tomorrow evening.

This test ride is a go.  I had at least 3 others reply in the positive.

Dear all,

Listening to the ideas of the interested parties, I think we can do the pacline ride tomorrow in an alternative route.

Starting at D.G. Cooley Elementary at 6:00 PM
Doing the alternative route suggested by Worlfgang: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/43987715 (we will start at the school, a few blocks from 7 Eleven)
It is a new route, so we can do an A level ride (a little slower than A+) and no drop, as suggested by Ken.

I hope to see the usual suspects tomorrow!

Thank you Ricardo for organizing. I'm very interested. I can't do tomorrow though if in fact this is a go. I am in FR and the further I have to drive out of town for a weekday for a ride will make it more prohibitive.

pedal on,
Lucas

PS - I am new to WW and FR, but not cycling. I am enjoying meeting many of you as I can get out there!

Dear all,

Thank you for your ideas. We have two options:

1. White Hall. I found this route on Ride With GPS, starting at White Hall church, 25 miles: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/33179081

2. Lollipop route suggested by Wolfgang, 28 miles.

I'm good either way, and appreciate the alternative to the White Post loop. Let me know your preference by tomorrow, so we can finalize the route and load it on our Garmins (and Wahoos).

We can do a regular, non drop ride, as suggested by Ken until we become familiar with the route.

Ricardo
