This new ebook announcement from Take Control seems (to me) to be very appropriate given the amount of large scale data breaches, spam email, text scams, phony “phishing” emails, etc.

For example, I learned recently that both my and my wife’s personal info (virtually all of it including SS #’s) was part of a massive data breach last January at a large medical “imaging” company used by nearly all hospitals and healthcare offices in the state of WA. As is typical of large data breaches, they notified us 10 months after the breach, suggested we watch for unusual activity on our credit / financial accounts, and offered to pay for the usual 1-2 years of ID protection service. How thoughtful of them...

Check it out. Just click on the eBook image below. And remember, as a prior MUG member (or Mac User friend of mine), you are entitled to a serious discount. And for sure take a look at Take Control's catalog of ebooks… it offers an amazing list of Apple gear related topics.

Cheers,
Mac

Glenn Fleishman’s book “Keep Safe Using Mobile Tech", which shows you how you can use devices you’re likely to have on your person (such as a smartphone or smartwatch) to stay safe in many different senses, has now been updated to its second edition. This major revision contains up-to-date information on the latest hardware, operating systems, and features from Apple, Google (Android and Wear OS), and third parties. As always, you can save 30% with your MUG discount (just enter coupon code CPN90219MUG on the Cart page before you check out)—or, save 50% with a Take Control Premium membership.

Reminder: A Take Control Premium membership is an optional $14.99 add-on to any book. It saves you 50% on all books you buy from us for a full year, including the books in your current order!

The book covers both digital threats (such as online abuse, account hijacking, and text message spam) and physical threats (such as theft, domestic violence, and being in a car crash). Your mobile devices can warn you about potential health issues, block abuse, call emergency services, connect with others to ensure you get to your destination, detect stalking by compact trackers, and much more. Glenn walks you through a wide variety of issues and explains both how to prepare your devices in advance and what to do if and when a problem occurs. The book focuses mainly on the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Android phones, but also covers Wear OS watches and, in more limited ways, iPads and computers running macOS or Windows.

We expect to release quite a few more updates before the end of the year.

Thanks again Mac. We got the same letter, where they deigned to mention it 10 months later. I know security is really complicated when you're looking under the hood trying to understand what happened and what to do, but I bet it was the lawyers who got antsy and said you better tell the customers.

I know Richard Feynman said something about having to upgrade your theory when the experimental evidence contradicts it, but I'm really having to work to upgrade my understanding of human nature and how things work. I'm actually kind of stunned that I've been so ignorant and oblivious. It helps me understand how other people can also be going off in all directions.

But enough of that. Thanks for continuing to post here all these years.
