Hit-and-run accident

Hi Neighbors -

     I live just over the village line in Auburndale, and Tuesday night (9/12/23) at around 6:20 PM I was involved in a hit-and-run accident while my car was stopped in front of 15 Davis Ave., West Newton. The driver that hit me turned and proceeded down Eden Ave. This person was driving what looked to me like a large Enterprise rental truck. The police officer that came to the scene said that he was going to check with Enterprise to see if any damaged trucks get returned, but I thought it was worth checking to see if anyone knows of a home or business camera in the area that might’ve captured a video of the truck leaving the scene. Sorry to hear this happened to you.  I hope someone has a camera that may show it.  

The Police should (and I hope will) check the entire neighborhood for cameras that will show video for the moments  before and after the incident. Make sure you give them the closest time you are able.

Thanks, Kate. I did check with the gas station and they are looking into it. I don’t know what childcare center you’re talking about. Can you send me any additional information about how to contact them?

The childcare I think Kate is referring to is Family Access, which is located in the old elementary school between Waltham and Eden. They might have exterior cameras but I doubt they would capture Eden -- but it's worth asking.

Hi Lynn,

This may be a question that NPD has to ask to get an answer from Enterprise, but you could ask the responding officer. Does Enterprise have GPS trackers on their rental vehicles to be able to find them if they get stolen? Of so, they might be able to determine which truck was in that area, independent of whether it had any damage.

I live on Eden Ave and don’t know of any neighbors that have a ring doorbell (with camera) but there may be some.  I will walk down the street to see if there are any cameras and I will send a personal email to my neighbors about your ordeal.  I’m so sorry this has happened to you.

Hi Pam -

     Thank you for your reply and your concern. I am hoping to track down the person that hit me because otherwise I have to pay the $500 deductible. I have found a few possibilities.

     Last week I left my contact information with the manager of the Shell station to try to get their camera footage. I have not heard back yet. 

     Yesterday I was able to hand out flyers to some (but not all) of the houses on Eden Avenue. I’m not sure if I missed your house. 

     In the process of handing out the flyers I met the owner of number 42. He said that they do have cameras, but the cameras may have been turned off since they are having work done on their house. He was going to check with his wife (a police officer) and get back to me.

     In response to a flyer, today I heard from Michael Spitaels who lives at 29 Eden. He does have a camera that was on, but because of his porch overhang some of the view was limited. He was able to email me the footage from his camera which I will forward to you. I’m not sure that it will be helpful, but I will also be forwarding it to Officer Cunning, the police officer that came to the scene.

     Also, in response to a flyer, yesterday I communicated by text message with Andrea, who lives at number 4 Eden Avenue. She has cameras, but she does not hold the recordings for as far back as last week. She is under the impression that the company will release the videos if the police request them. I am in the process of trying to reach Officer Cunning about this.

     While handing out a flyer yesterday I met the owners of 15 David’s Ave., the house that the accident happened in front of. They told me that the house at 3 Davis has a camera. I left my contact information with the daughter at 3 Davis Ave.
