Folks -

So my old WeatherLink (Vantage Vue) console has some dead pixels and the LCD is faint as heck. Half of the back light doesn't work, etc.

So it's time to upgrade. The sensor suite works fine and feed weewx still. The thing is that I really don't see the need for another display like the old console. Our family uses a display in the kitchen that I rigged up showing the webpage (or we look on our phones.) We rarely look at the official "console". I'd like to replace the console with a headless unit.

I see the two standalone units - the WeatherLink Live (WLLive) and the WeatherLink IP (WLIP). The WLIP is obviously more expensive and (worse yet) requires a subscription. The WLLive version is less expensive - I can't tell if it requires either a subscription or an online connection, but I'd like to avoid both. Also, the WL Live isn't officially weewx supported, but seems to be well covered through extensions from the community and stable.

I guess my question is this - is there any real reason to buy the more expensive WLIP unit?

Thanks, folks!

I have a WeatherLink Live 6100 device. For setup it requires an account with Davis (which is for free). WeeWX can get data from that device directly. There are several drivers available for that. The WeeWX built-in driver "vantage" is not suitable for the WeatherLink Live 6100.

I am not sure what you mean by "WeatherLink IP". There was an adapter "WeatherLink IP 6555" which was not a standalone device but a an adaptor to the old console. It is outdated and not manufactured any more.

As names are not sure, it is better to use article numbers.

Another option is to salvage the logger from your old console and use it in a Weather Envoy 6316. They're about $200 retail.

Agree with Karen about the SKUs. Virtually everything in the Davis product line is named "WeatherLink" these days.

I had an old Vantage Pro console with a faint LCD display.  I just opened it up and reseated the ribbon cable, it's worked fine since.  I've never seen a Vue console, so I don't know if you can do that, but might be worth a try even if you don't pay much attention to the console.
