The Catherine Street Bike Lane Extension

Hello All!

I'm confused by the design of the bike path extension on Catherine.  I wonder if I am missing something; it appears to guarantee that cars and bicycles will have to cross paths at Division.  

There must be a reason for this that my pea-sized brain doesn't grasp, for the obvious approach would be to position the bike lanes on the south side of Catherine on both sides of Division.

Hi Tim, 

I've spent quite a bit of time at that intersection observing to see how it works (and doesn't work at times)

The idea behind it is that it has a dedicated walk/bike phase on Catherine. Traffic does indeed cross over but if everyone follows the light phases there are no conflicts. This breaks down if a car does an illegal turn (or continue straight) on red, or if a cyclist rides through a red "don't walk" signal and attempts to cross on a green traffic light. 

I'm not sure why the bikeway crosses Catherine from north side to the south side of the road there.
