FYI, if you’re interested in the work of these commissions. This is in response to the death of Dot Dobbins in a crosswalk in Germantown in June.  I assume it will be in council chambers

BPAC, T&P, VZAC, and T&I members,

Thank you for your service to our city.

Following recent discussions at Traffic and Parking Commission, we have scheduled a joint meeting for next monday. The meeting will be held at the council chambers at the Historic Courthouse. I am working on getting parking passes for attendees and will send a final agenda and logistical notes later in the week.

The purpose of the meeting is to convene the four entities, hear from each other, and hear from NDOT. A lot of great work is happening to make our city safer and more accessible but we also face enormous challenges. I'm hopeful that this gathering will help us understand better what each group is working on and how we can work better with NDOT and other responsible agencies.

My intent is for the meeting to focus more on process, roles, and responsibilities rather than specific issues such as a particular dangerous intersection.

The chairs of each body have confirmed availability. We would like as many members from each body to attend as possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or requests for accommodation.

The agenda is here.

To my knowledge the Council Transportation Committee during this term has never heard from these commissions that deal with transportation.

If you have some spare time I would be interested in comments from others about yesterday's meeting. Some good things were said but the NDOT response was very defensive and I sympathize with some of it. There are structural impediments to many infrastructure changes but you wonder if a more aggressive approach would help speed it up. Near the end Diana Alarcon, NDOT Director, said we need more "education".  Katherine McDonnell, chair of BPAC, pointed out that changing behavior is hard and we need better infrastructure for real change.

The O'Connell administration has not said anything about this except through NDOT. Some of the Mayor's staff was there but they looked bored and didn't stick around. All three committees are controlled by NDOT bureaucrats and to some degree that is inevitable but is really frustrating to some of us. The last BPAC meeting heard about the HUB and street sweeping rather than saving the lives of pedestrians.

I agree with Katherine. Nashville needs more and better infrastructure to support safe and convenient biking (including scooters) and walking. Improved infrastructure is a precondition to the culture change touted by Ms. Alacron. Metro needs to provide more funding for that infrastructure.
