Hello, everyone,

Please check--especially when you see a tree of heaven--for early instar spotted lantern fly nymphs. I saw a t-o-h behind the chain link fence on the north side of the ball field yesterday. It was loaded with s.l.f., so I took a leaf and tried to smash as many as possible on the trunk.

I've reported this to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Have you reported the location to the Ohio Department of Agriculture?

No, on their website, it says:
  • ODA is not currently removing SLF or tree of heaven from private properties. Please view our Management Guide (pdf) for treatment options.
  • Inspect Items: Check outdoor furniture, garden equipment, and firewood for SLF before moving them. Follow quarantine regulations if moving to a new area.
  • Remove Host Plants: Remove SLF host plants like the invasive tree-of-heaven and wild grapevine.
  • Destroy Egg Masses: Scrape egg masses into soapy water or rubbing alcohol, or treat with horticultural oils in winter or early spring.
  • Control Nymphs and Adults: Swat or stomp them when populations are low. Live and dead lanternflies can also be removed with a vacuum cleaner or shop vac, promptly disposing of the vacuum bag.
  • Use Low-Toxicity Insecticides: Apply horticultural oils and insecticidal soaps for nymphs and adults, reapplying as needed.
  • Apply Contact and Systemic Insecticides: Use bifenthrin, carbaryl, malathion for spot treatments, and dinotefuran or imidacloprid for longer protection. Consider hiring a professional pest control business for severe infestations or to remove tree-of-heaven.

Did we get any specific guidance on what to do with the regrowth on the tree of life that they cut down? They are sprouting from all along the roots.

My grapevines are decorative and if they keep the bugs from eating my other plants, I am o.k. with that. I have filled a lot but they are prolific.

If you are seeing resprouting of tree of heaven, you should report it to Tiffany at Blueprint or Cameron.  The contractor likely is responsible for making sure the trees are actually  dead.

Thank you for the update and the planned reapplication.

Good morning all,
I wanted to send another note and follow up. We had a meeting with the Walhalla Project Manager, Jehan, last week and noted these concerns. She is mobilizing Complete General to return to the ravine ASAP to re-apply herbicide to any areas showing new growth. I'm told the crew tried very hard to use as small of an amount of herbicide as necessary to eliminate any other plant issues. In some cases, they may have gone just a bit too light on the application. That said, they should be back out in the ravine soon. I will follow up today with an email to any residents with invasives listed on their properties.

Good morning Cindy and Michele,
This is not what we want to hear. I just sent this over to Jehan Alkhayri to review ASAP. If confirmed, I would imagine we will be out for a re-treatment very soon to determine why the roots did not act as expected. I will be in touch when I hear more information
