Hi neighbors,

I’m at 476 and my wife Rachel is an avid birdwatcher. She has started using the Merlin Bird ID app recently to help identify some of the more obscure birds that migrate through the ravine about this time each year.

This app is very faintly picking up the hoots of a Great Horned Owl and we’re curious if anyone has actually seen it or knows where it might be?

After a week or so of looking the app is still picking it up from time to time but we’re no closer to locating it. We’re unsure if it’s actually an owl or some background noise that the app is just translating incorrectly.

Any help or insight is appreciated! Thank you!

There's a barred owl off my deck hooting fairly regularly to another barred.
My visual puts it as a barred owl.  No ears.

That would be fun if it pans out! There is a nesting pair of Barred Owls just east of the Calumet Bridge... the young uns have fledged and so the group has dispersed a bit, but I haven't personally seen or heard a Great Horned. Merlin Sound ID is less good with more distant sounds.

Thanks so much!  We very much enjoy the barred owls in the ravine but thought the potential of having a great horned around here was really neat.

Jimmy,
We live on Weber, next to the schoolyard. Years ago (at least 10), there was a Great Horned Owl in the area: we got to see it only once, when some crows were harassing it at the top of a tall pine tree in the middle of the day. We could clearly see the "horns," which were upright due to the owl's annoyance. The bird was enormous.
It would be wonderful to think there's one in the area again.
