Ethan’s post yesterday inspired me to explore more of the Burlington bay before the snow arrives. I started at the sailing center in Burlington shortly before 9:00 am. It was a short walk from the boat ramp until I could skate on patches of black ice and around firm snow patches. I went first around Rock Point to Appletree Bay. The skating was nicer in the bay do to less snow. I run into David and Alison and we skated together around Appletree point. I ended up skating about 3 miles North from Appletree Point along the edge of some newer ice. I did not skate on the new ice. The new ice was only about 1 ½ poke thick and full of ice feathers. Instead, I skated on older thick ice that was located between the new ice and a large rubble field that goes all the way to the shore. This was the best skating of the day, the least amount of snow, the largest lanes and the best ice quality. I turned around once the thicker ice ended and I would have to skate on the newer ice. The ice was very noisy and there was some movement on the pressure ridges. There was some wind from the South. But the route I skated was solid.

I turned around and I skated upwind to Juniper island and then to Shelburne point and back to the Sailing Center. The skating was very diverse. Sometimes, I had nice lanes and no snow, some bumpier patches and a couple of healed cracks and small pressure ridges to cross. The ice was at least 5 to 7 inches. I was unable to poke through the ice. The closer I got to Juniper Island, the more silent the ice got.

I was hoping that there was nice ice between Red Rock and Shelburne Point. Last Wednesday, there was a beautiful plate in that area. The plate was now rubble field, 6-8 inch plates pushed together. Instead, I got to observe 2 bald eagles flying over me. I found some good ice to get me close to the breakwater. I had to walk about 100 yards through rubble to reach breakwater and skated to the sailing center from there.
