Had fun skate on thick gray cantelope texture ice yest.My first skate of the season that did not feel like I was on thin ice.Saw the pair of resident Eagles watch us from their nest.I should think this 80 acre pond could refreeze to a great surface.

As I hoped, the weather event we just went through, only made the condition s better on this cute lake with a couple small coves to explore and a pair of resident Eagles with a nest on the far end.Hard snow ice with a smooth -slight pebbly surface

Halls Lake was excellent today.  As described below, it was pebbly but plenty smooth to skate fast and far.  I believe this may be the closest decent ice to Chittenden County.  Thanks, Sarah!

Is anyone planning on skating tomorrow (perhaps Halls)? Blaine, that ice looks amazing!

Anyone interested in being on the road early , like 7 am Wednesday morning? I would need to leave the ice by 11:00 to get back in time. I am working Tuesday, Wed, and Thursday.  I don’t want to drive 3 hours round trip to skate alone. I don’t mind driving alone, because I need to get back, and others will want to continue to skate. But I’d like to skate with someone who could be on the ice at 9. I’ll get down there by then if anyone else is going to be there that early on Wednesday.

Is this the place?: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Halls+Lake/@44.0852628,-72.132087,15z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x4cb4f3dcb8e9b8bb:0xc43e651c1b2d4ddf!2sHalls+Lake!3b1!8m2!3d44.0858256!4d-72.1226553!3m4!1s0x4cb4f3dcb8e9b8bb:0xc43e651c1b2d4ddf!8m2!3d44.0858256!4d-72.1226553

I could do it.  It would be about 3 hrs rt for me from Burlington I think.

Ok, if no snow, I will aim to be there at 9:00. Any snow and I am not interested. I ripped up both shoulders last winter because of multiple falls on snow covered ice. All summer PT, and I gave some reasonable range of motion, but still left over pain and still very weak.  I want to get a stronger upper body, not start all over again. Snow covered ice does not interest me, that will be a no go. I’ll be watching the radar for precipitation.

Sherry Grey I am setting my navigation up to that place , so I am hoping it’s correct. From the satellite, it looks like the parking is on the North end of it.

I see there is "Halls Pond" which is a beach, on the NW side, just a bit SW of the parking area on google maps satellite. I will head for there in the morning, to arrive by 9am or a bit before: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hall's+Pond/@44.0900128,-72.1257181,21z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x4cb4f3dcb8e9b8bb:0xc43e651c1b2d4ddf!2sHalls+Lake!3b1!8m2!3d44.0858256!4d-72.1226553!3m4!1s0x4cb4f3e73702e981:0x20ccb6b5ad0c384e!8m2!3d44.0901374!4d-72.1256103

So far, NWS for Newbury Wed (sunny today) is: A 40 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. South wind 6 to 8 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

My cell is 651 8088310.  I will be in the blue Crosstrek, Minnesota license plates.

Looks like there is a beach access at the north end. Might be room for a few cars. Otherwise on the side of the road in that vicinity.

At Halls pond there is plenty parking at north end by the beach. This lake is about 80 acres and this morning had an ever so light dust of snow. The biggest hazard there is the sticks and cones that fell along edges with the storm

Got a very helpful report from Jo (see below):

McDaniels Marsh, 15 mins away, is a very special wilderness area, and a very unusual skating opportunity, also very solid , only hazard I saw the obvious dam at the parking area (per report by friend this a.m.)

We are thinking of exploring tomorrow. Is everyone set on Halls or is anyone interested in the marsh? We can be flexible on start time! Maybe 10am since it’s a bit further?

I think we're going to stick to Hall's ETA about 9 am and then perhaps explore Little Sunapee afterwards. We're in Montpelier so both are a little over an hours drive. If we have time we'll check on Mascoma on our way home. Looks like tomorrow will be the last good day before the warmup this weekend.

We are headed to McDaniel’s Marsh now. Will send a report later. If anyone is interested in joining, we should be there around 10:30am.

Reminder: No parking at Bucklin Beach on Little Sunapee, except for local residents with a beach sticker. You can try to park at the dam if there's room.

Hall's lake was awesome. 4-5" of ice. No danger of swimming today.

Hurrah!   Did you find parking at north end, past the beach area?  With temps warming tomorrow, it might be good early tomorrow morning, but not so great after.

Little Lake Sunape is awesome as well. 3 -4" thick everywhere and some great leads of black ice.

McDaniels Marsh was beautiful! Not the smoothest ice, but very solid, and a few decent plates of smoother ice. We skated the circumference of the lake twice...made for a wonderful first skate of the season. Hoping for a refreeze of many areas to come!
