Hi Everyone,

Three of us skated at Keiser Pond in Danville, VT early this am and it was a great session of "powder skating." The perfect black ice from this weekend was covered by about 2 inches of fresh fluffy snow. The wind was blowing, but not terribly as the lake faces east-west and it was a W/NW wind. The snow was so light it offered very little resistance but may get more consolidated as the day moves on if the wind increases. If you are in the area, you may want to consider this. I would imagine after tomorrow it will be covered up for a long time. There may be some issues with parking at the fish and game area off Harvey's Hollow Rd. I believe someone was told by Fish and Game on Sun that the parking area was only for ice fisherman, not skaters since the fisherman buy a license. I don't know all of the details but I parked there this am and while I was skating the police came up and spent several minutes by the cars and then drove off, just as an FYI.

Matt,

Good to meet you last weekend on the pond.  I believe that information about non-ice fishing activities being prohibited is incorrect.  Linked from the Keiser Pond WMA webpage (https://fpr.vermont.gov/keiser-pond-wildlife-management-area) this page indicates the following as an authorized activity on fish and wildlife land:
  1. Dispersed, wildlife-based pedestrian activities including walking, snowshoeing, swimming, cross-country skiing, and collection of shed antlers;

I know others have shared information on this issue in the past, so I'd appreciate a refresher on any nuance from those who have dealt with this before.  If officers are going to claim that fishing licenses are parking permits, there should be signs posted and any enforcement should be based on actual code or rules.

Thanks, Blaine

Blaine and others,

Fishing Access Areas have their own set of rules.  https://vtfishandwildlife.com/sites/fishandwildlife/files/documents/Fish/Boating/access-area-rules.pdf

There is usually a kiosk with those rules posted.

Joel

This was my husband's experience in the parking lot at Keiser Pond (Danville, VT), below.  Seems consistent with the F&W rules Joel linked to (also below).  I don't know if it's the same for NH's Fish and Game, Maine's Fish and Wildlife, or NY's equivalent.

<< Sunday morning at Keiser Pond a game warden made a polite request that the group be advised we were parked in a VT Fish & Wildlife parking area, intended for hunters, fishermen and trappers, and like all such sites it was paid via those folks' license fees, and that makes it their parking and access.  He wasn’t looking for trouble and had no issue that day because there weren’t any licensees just skaters, but if hears complaints or sees skaters making it hard to park then he’ll have the option to send the skaters away. >>

The cost of a Vermont fishing license is $28 for a year. That’s an option for skaters who want to utilize Fish & Wildlife parking areas. Carpooling would make it worthwhile.
