There is about a 5 mile long section in the center of the lake that caught two nights ago. I tested it at Georgeville walking out a distance in the late afternoon today. It was a solid 2+ inches definitely a little weak from being in the sun all day,but it had a very very light dusting of snow, which I think had kept it from degrading too much during the warmth of the afternoon. With predicted temperatures tonight this ice should be close to 2 1/2 inches or more by morning as far as I could tell, it looked uniform, in both directions with similar looking cracks visible through the snow. But there is not a view of the whole area that was recently frozen from Georgeville. Georgeville has a nice little restaurant which I have not been to, but is right on the water.
This ice could be good for much of the day tomorrow given that it is supposed to cloud up, but probably best in the early morning until late morning. After that, I suspect wet cracks will open up on thin ice. I had already put in a bunch of miles today, so I did not skate, but it would’ve been possible to skate at this afternoon although noisy.
This section of the lake is the most beautiful part in my opinion, so, even though it is only 5 miles long, I think it will probably be worth the travel for those willing to skate on relatively thin ice. It is possible this ice might survive the coming warm-up, or it might melt, if it does survive, it could be a good opportunity when it gets cold again. I have included a picture of the satellite image from three days ago, which shows the new Ice area in Black as it was open water then.
