South of the bridge a total bust but found some real treasures on the bay.

Based on no scouting and desperate longing for a big adventure a bunch of launched from the info center at the foot of the Champlain bridge. This can be a sketchy area some years but we got right on the ice and headed south into a light wind. It was hard going right from the beginning. A combination of catchy ice and grabby snow drift were downright awful. We gave an honest attempt, perhaps a couple of miles and turned around. We entertained the idea of driving to Port Henry but then decided to skate there directly by sneaking under the bridge and around the point. Some years this route is super sketchy but again not bad this time. We found some skimmed over holes on the VT side of the bridge but they were avoidable by staying on the NY shore. Bulwagga bay turned out to be a real gem. 4” of black ice with varying snow cover. The drifted snow was very catchy but we put together a great tour connecting various lanes and weaving a line around snow drifts. Healed fold down ridges, like my earlier photo were spectacular. Sometimes we’d find a crack feature that somehow created a snow shadow (this photo). The western shore of the bay was tucked out of the wind and it was quite pleasant to skate through uniform snow.

I particularly enjoyed being out on such a clear cold day. We had a great crew too. Did I miss anything? Hopefully others can add more photos, videos and tracks.

Sandra,

Look at the videos. They give a decent representation of conditions. I would say figure skates would not work very well on this ice. The ice surface is too uneven. The snow patches are too close together. The snow is too grabby. Others may have a different opinion.

Sandra,

The ice was mostly 3", but there were places where it was less than that and too hazardous to venture on. Also, if a major southwind picks up that would be an off ice wind and could induce the plate to crack and break up.
